The Cleveland Indians acquire P Derek Lowe from Atlanta in return for minor league P Chris Jones and cash. Lowe led the major leagues with 17 losses last year.
2011 – The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim name Jerry Dipoto as their new General Manager, replacing Tony Reagins.
After being down by 10.5 games on August 25 for the NL Central Division lead, the Cardinals beat the Rangers at Busch Stadium, 6-2, in Game 7 of the Fall Classic to win their eleventh world championship in franchise history. In Game 6, the Redbirds had been down to their last strike in both the ninth and the 10th inning but rallied to tie the score and eventually win the game on David Freese’s lead-off, walk-off home run to centerfield in the 11th.
2011 – Down to their last strike twice, the Cardinals come back from two-run deficits in both the 9th and 10th innings to defeat the Rangers, 10 – 9, and force a Game 7 in the World Series for the first time since 2002. David Freese ends the thrilling game with a walk-off home run off Mark Lowe in the 11th inning.
New Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein announces the appointment of Jed Hoyer, who worked with him with the Boston Red Sox, as the team’s new general manager. The San Diego Padres are expected to name Josh Byrnes as Hoyer’s replacement and will receive a player in compensation from the Cubs.
Texas takes a 3-games-to-2 lead in the World Series with a 4 – 2 win at home over the Cardinals. Mike Napoli drives in two runs in the bottom of the 8th with a bases-loaded double off Marc Rzepczynski when manager Tony LaRussa doesn’t have right-hander Jason Motte ready to come into the game because of a mix-up in communications with his bullpen.
2011 – The Rangers tie the World Series at two games each with a 4 – 0 shutout of the Cardinals in Game 4. Derek Holland is masterful, pitching 8 1/3 innings while giving up only two hits, and Mike Napoli hits a three-run homer in the 6th.
In the Cardinals’ 16-7 rout of the Rangers in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, Albert Pujols hits three homers, drives in six runs, and collects five hits, all equaling World Series records. ‘Prince Albert’, who also set a Series mark with 14 total bases, connects on fastballs from three different Texas pitchers, joining Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson for the most round-trippers in a World Series game.
The Rangers tie the World Series at one game apiece with a 9th-inning comeback over the Cardinals, giving them a 2 – 1 win. It’s a scoreless game for 6 1/2 innings, as Colby Lewis and Jaime Garcia duel, until pinch-hitter Allen Craig drives in a run for the second straight game in the 7th. It stays that way until the 9th, when the Rangers use a pair of singles, a stolen base and a pair of sacrifice flies to stage a two-run rally against closer Jason Motte.
2011 – The Cardinals win Game 1 of the World Series at home, defeating Texas, 3 – 2. Chris Carpenter pitches six strong innings, his only flaw being Mike Napoli’s two-run homer in the 5th. A single by pinch-hitter Allen Craig off Alexi Ogando breaks the 2 – 2 tie in the 6th, and the Cards benefit from another strong collective performance by their bullpen, with five relievers combining to shut out the Rangers over the last three frames.
