U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton declares a mistrial in the trial of Roger Clemens on perjury charges, explaining that the prosecution has repeatedly ignored his directives regarding how evidence can be introduced to the jury.

The Marlins explode for 6 runs in the 9th inning in Wrigley Field to beat the Cubs, 6 – 3, for their sixth straight win. Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs hits a bases-clearing double off closer Carlos Marmol to put his team on the scoreboard after they enter the 9th trailing, 2 – 0. The Marlins send 11 batters to the plate in their last turn at bat, negating a solid outing by Cubs starter Matt Garza, who throws seven scoreless innings. After blowing another 9th-inning lead tomorrow, Marmol will be relieved of the closer’s job.

Reggie Walton, the presiding judge in the Roger Clemens perjury case, declares a mistrial due to evidence revealed to the jury he believed would be prejudicial against the former major league right-hander. During the brief two days of the proceedings, the U.S. District Judge had scolded prosecutors twice during the trial for violating his orders not to reveal certain evidence to the jury, saying their non-compliance could put the whole case in jeopardy.

With jury selection complete, both sides make their opening arguments in the trial of Roger Clemens for perjury. It is clear that the central issue will be the credibility of Clemens’ former trainer, Brian McNamee, who has supplied much of the prosecution’s key evidence and will be its star witness. For its part, the defense argues that “Clemens’ only crime was having the poor judgment of staying connected with McNamee”, claiming that none of the allegations are founded and that the physical evidence is the result of tampering.

A half-hour after the Mid-summer Classic is completed, the Mets send former All-Star reliever Francisco Rodriguez and cash to the Brewers for two players to be named later. K-Rod, an outstanding closer for the Mets and Angels, will be used primarily as a set-up man for Milwaukee’s John Axford.

The National League is the winner of the 2011 All-Star Game, played in Phoenix, AZ, 5 – 1 over the American League. Prince Fielder hits a three-run homer to put the NL ahead in the 4th and wins the game’s MVP award; Adrian Gonzalez accounts for the junior circuit’s only run with a solo homer. Tyler Clippard picks up the win and C.J. Wilson the loss.

Robinson Cano wins the annual All-Star Game Home Run Derby with a record-breaking performance in the final round at Chase Field. After Adrian Gonzalez ties the best-ever home run total for a final round with 11, Cano, hitting off his father Jose, launches 12 balls into the stands with 4 outs to spare to claim the crown.

The United States team beats the World team, 6 – 4, in the 2011 Futures Game held in Phoenix, AZ. Jason Kipnis leads off the bottom of the 1st inning with a homer off Julio Teheran, but the game is decided in the 8th when Grant Green opens the inning with a double, then scores the tying run on Tim Beckham’s single. Austin Romine follows with another hit to put the U.S. ahead and Nolan Arenado adds an insurance run with a double. Green is the recipient of the Larry Doby Award as the game’s MVP.
