Ichiro Suzuki goes 7 for 8 as the Yankees sweep a doubleheader with the Blue Jays, 4 – 2 and 2 – 1. Andy Pettitte makes his return to the mound from a broken fibula in winning the opener, while Derek Jeter collects his 200th hit of the season in the nitecap, tying Lou Gehrig who also recorded 200 hits eight times for the Yankees.

The Dodgers defeat the Nationals, 7 – 6, in the second game of a doubleheader with some help from a botched call. Matt Kemp is credited with a run scored in the 4th inning, giving Los Angeles a 6 – 0 lead, even though he crosses the plate after Adrian Gonzalez is tagged out at third base for the inning’s final out. The Nationals then manage to tie the score with a six-run 8th inning, but Kemp leads off the 9th with a solo homer off Tyler Clippard to account for the deciding run. Following a 3 – 1 win in the opener, a sweep of the twinbill would have clinched a playoff spot for Washington for the first time since moving to the nation’s capital in 2005.

Taylor Teagarden strokes a pinch-hit single in the 18th inning to give the Orioles a 4 – 2 win over the Seattle Mariners, and put them in a first-place tie with the New York Yankees in the AL East. The O’s need to rally from a 2 – 0 deficit in the top of the 9th, as Ryan Flaherty and Nate McLouth, open the frame with singles, chasing starter Erasmo Ramirez, who had only given up 2 hits until then. J.J. Hardy bunts the two runners over, then Chris Davis drives them both in with a single off closer Tom Wilhelmsen, sending the game into extra innings.

The Tigers defeat the red-hot Athletics, 12 – 2, but lose P Max Scherzer, who departs after two innings with shoulder fatigue. Miguel Cabrera homers twice, including a grand slam in the 8th, and drives in 6 runs; Prince Fielder and Jhonny Peralta also homer as A.J. Griffin is the loser after starting his career with 6 straight wins.

2012 – The two contenders for the AL Central crown play a make-up game necessitated by a rainout four days earlier. Chicago comes out ahead, 5 – 4, over Detroit. The key play occurs in the 5th when Alex Rios goes barreling into 2B Omar Infante to break up a potential inning-ending double play; his hard slide causes an errant throw which allows two runs to score. The Sox’s bullpen then holds the lead as Nate Jones improves to 8-0.

The Orioles secure their first winning record since 1997 with a 9 – 5 win over the Athletics, giving them 82 wins on the year. Matt Wieters homers twice off Dan Straily to lead the offense, but the O’s can’t gain ground on the first-place Yankees, who beat the Rays, 6 – 4, behind Hiroki Kuroda and Rafael Soriano’s 40th save of the season. At the end of the day, New York leads by one game over Baltimore and 5 over the falling Rays.

The Orioles, with their 9-5 victory over Oakland, are assured of having their first winning season since the team finished first in the AL East in 1997. The Birds will finish the campaign with a 93-69 record for a second-place finish, but will earn a spot in the postseason as the play-in Wild Card team.

The Dodgers beat the Cardinals, 4 – 3, on a pair of runs in the bottom of the 9th. Closer Jason Motte is on the mound with two outs and no one on when the Dodgers start their winning rally. Andre Ethier singles and pinch-runner Dee Gordon steals second base. Luis Cruz doubles him in, then Juan Rivera singles, driving in another pinch-runner, Elian Herrera, with the game-winner.

Ivan Nova is a winner in his return from the disabled list, 5 – 3, over the Rays. Curtis Granderson and Eduardo Nunez hit back-to-back homers in the 2nd to give the Yankees a 3 – 0 lead, and they never look back. Out three weeks with a shoulder inflammation, Nova picks up his 12th win and puts the Bronx Bombers one game ahead of their main rivals, the Orioles, who lose to the A’s, 5 – 2. For their part, the Rays are now four games back and in danger of falling out of playoff contention altogether.

By flubbing a simple ground ball hit by the Reds’ Drew Stubbs, SS Jose Reyes of the Marlins is charged with the 500,000th error in major league baseball history.
