In his first start since pitching a perfect game, Felix Hernandez of the Mariners surrenders a base hit to Indians lead-off hitter Jason Kipnis, but wins the game, 5 – 1, thanks to Jesus Montero’s three-run homer in the 7th. It is Seattle’s 7th straight win.

Corendon Kinheim completes a stunning sweep of DOOR Neptunus in the 2012 Holland Series with a 9 – 2 pounding, thanks to home runs by Dirk van ‘t Klooster and Bryan Engelhardt and a 13-strikeout gem by Series MVP David Bergman. Kinheim had fired head coach Eelco Jansen in the first round of the playoffs but rallied under replacement Hans Lemmink to win it all.

The Athletics acquire shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks in return for minor league infielder Sean Jamieson.

The Marlins collect a season-best 20 hits in defeating Arizona, 12 – 3. They tie a club record with 9 runs in the 4th inning, when they roll out half of their hits. Giancarlo Stanton hits a pair of homers for the Fish, and Jose Reyes and John Buck have four hits each. Reyes’ hits includes 3 doubles, while Buck homers, as does Justin Ruggiano, for a team that has struggled finding its offense all season. Mark Buehrle gets the win over Joe Saunders.

The Pirates win a 19-inning marathon at St. Louis, 6 – 3. In the 17th, P James McDonald hits a pinch single and comes to score on Garrett Jones’ single which defects just off the glove of P Marc Rzepczynski. However, Juan Cruz is unable to close the game, allowing a game-tying sacrifice fly to Tony Cruz that scores pinch-runner Ryan Jackson in the bottom of the inning. Two innings later, Pedro Alvarez hits a solo homer off Barret Browning and Andrew McCutchen adds a two-run single before Wandy Rodriguez, tomorrow’s scheduled starter, pitches a second scoreless inning to wrap up the game.

Chad Billingsley wins his 6th straight start, pitching 7 innings in a 5 – 0 win over the Braves, and Los Angeles is back in first place in the back-and-forth NL West. Veteran minor league journeyman Luis Cruz hits his second homer in as many days and Mark Ellis drives in the other 4 runs.

In the 2012 Women’s Baseball World Cup, Japan tops the USA, 3 – 0, in the Gold Medal game for their third straight title. It is the best US finish since 2006. Yukari Isozaki scatters 7 hits in a complete game shutout to improve to 3-0, 0.33 in the Cup and take MVP honors. In the Bronze Medal game, it’s a different story, as host Canada edges Australia in a 17 – 13 slugfest with four RBI apiece from Ashley Stephenson and Stéphanie Savoie and four hits and four runs from Jenna Flannigan. Canada had not gotten a Medal in 2010, the only time they failed to do so in the five Women’s World Cups to this point.

The Rouen Huskies win their 8th straight French Division I title, topping the Templiers de Sénart, 12 – 8, to take the finals, 3 games to 1. Ethan Paquette goes 3 for 4 with 4 RBI, Joris Bert scores 3 runs and Owen Ozanichgets the win in the finale.
