Things unravel for him with a 2 – 0 lead in the 6th, when he issues back-to-back walks to Saunders and Brad Miller after one out, then a pair of passed balls and a sacrifice fly allow the M’s to tie the game without a hit. Bedard then allows another two walks in the 7th before leaving with two outs, having reached his pitch count limit, setting the table for Saunders’ double. Travis Blackley and Jose Veras toss a hitless inning each to complete the one-hitter, but it’s little consolation for the Astros.

At Miller Park in a game against Miami, the Brewers wear throwback jerseys to honor the Milwaukee Bears, a Negro League team that played in Brew Town during the 1923 season. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke has a wardrobe malfunction when the letter u on his uniform is misplaced, spelling out Milwakuee.

A surprise sixth contender participates in the Presidents Race when Sharknado, a character from the SyFy original movie about sharks being brought on land by a waterspout, ambushes George, Tom, Teddy, and Bill in the Nationals Park dash. Although Sharknado successfully blows past four of his competitors, Abe, with the wind to his back, secures a first-place finish.

60-year-old Paul Risso makes his professional baseball debut 40 years after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. A shoulder injury had ended his college career shortly after being drafted. Today, Risso tosses one shutout inning for the Raton Osos of the minor independent Pecos League, giving up one hit to the Santa Fe Fuego. He is not the oldest pitcher to appear in a minor league game: Hub Kittle (63 years old for Springfield in 1980) and Ramón Arano (62 years old for Veracruz in 2001) are among those older.

In the first All-Star Game played in the Queens in 49 years, the American League pitchers hold their National League opponents to just three hits, blanking the Senior Circuit at Citi Field, 3-0. Yankee closer Mariano Rivera, voted the game’s MVP, receives a standing ovation from the enthusiastic 45,186 fans in attendance when he enters the contest in the eighth inning en route to retiring three consecutive NL batters.

In the All-Star Game played at New York’s Citi Field, Salvador Perez, who replaced Joe Mauer behind the plate in the last inning, leads off the eighth with a single to right field off Atlanta’s Craig Kimbrel. The Kansas City catcher becomes the first Royals’ player to get a hit in the Mid-summer Classic since Bo Jackson blasted his memorable moonshot at Anaheim Stadium in 1989.

The American League wins the All-Star Game, 3 – 0, over the National League, as batters from the senior circuit only manage three hits. Mariano Rivera, who has announced his retirement at the end of the season, is named the MVP.
