However, Jeter leaves the game after the 5th inning with a tight quad muscle and will undergo an MRI.

On the day he is made an All-Star by winning the NL’s “Final Man Vote”, Braves 1B Freddie Freeman drives in 4 runs to lead his team to a 6 – 5 win over the Reds. Freeman hits a two-run double in the 1st and later adds a pair of run-scoring singles.

David Ortiz of the Red Sox becomes the all-time hit leader as a designated hitter when his 2nd-inning double gives him 1,689 safeties, breaking the mark held by Harold Baines. Big Papi then adds a two-run homer in the 3rd, his 8th hit in 9 at-bats, giving further evidence that he will add plenty more hits to the record before he’s done. Boston defeats Seattle, 11 – 4.

Boston’s David Ortiz ties Harold Baines for the most hits by a designated hitter when his eighth-inning single off Seattle’s Charlie Furbush gives him a total of 1,688 career hits as a DH. ‘Big Papi,’ before the record-tying at-bat, had already collected a home run and a pair of doubles in the Red Sox’ 11-8 victory at Safeco Field.

Alex Rios ties an American League record by going 6-for-6 in a 9-inning game as the White Sox defeat the Tigers, 11 – 4. The White Sox score 7 runs in the 8th, with Adam Dunndriving in 3 runs with a two-run homer and a single and Dayan Viciedo hitting his second long ball of the game. Rios is the 36th player to get 6 hits in a game, as the Sox record 23 safeties on the night. Miguel Cabrera hits his 29th homer for the Bengals, breaking the team record for most before the All-Star Game held by Cecil Fielder.

CF Carlos Gomez of the Brewers ends today’s game against the Reds by robbing fellow All-Star Joey Votto of a potential two-run homer by grabbing the ball over the fence for the last out. The great catch saves Milwaukee’s 4 – 3 win.

The Mets play their fourth game of 15 or more innings this season. After losing the first three marathons, they come out on top this time, defeating the San Francisco Giants, 4 – 3, when Eric Young Jr. scores on a 16th-inning error by SS Brandon Crawford. Buster Posey goes 5 for 8 with two doubles and a homer in a losing cause.

Michael Brantley hits a pair of homers as the Indians defeat the Tigers, 9 – 6, ending a string of seven straight losses to their divisional rivals. Brantley’s second homer, off Al Alburquerque in the 8th, gives the Indians the lead and he has 5 RBI on the night. Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall also go deep for the Tribe.

The Cubs trade OF Scott Hairston to the Nationals; he is hitting only .163, but has 7 homers and 18 RBIs in spite of only recording 16 hits.

The Dodgers acquire P Ricky Nolasco from the Marlins in return for minor leaguers Steve Ames, Josh Wall and Angel Sanchez.
