Things look bleak for the Angels as they stake the Mariners a 7 – 0 lead in the middle of the 3rd, with ace Felix Hernandez on the mound. But they manage to score in four consecutive innings, including 5 runs in the 5th, and even though the Mariners add a couple of insurance runs, they finally take the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the 8th to win, 10 – 9. The Halos manage seven consecutive hits, including a pair of homers by Peter Bourjos and Mark Trumbo, against “King Felix” in the 5th inning. The winning run scores when Yoervis Medina walks Alberto Callaspo with the bases loaded.

Mark Appel, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 first-year player draft, is introduced by the Astros at a Minute Maid Park press conference. The Stanford right-hander, a Houston native and a fan of the team growing up, will receive a $6.35 million signing bonus, which is significantly less than the assigned slot value of $7.8 million.

The Rangers finally get a win from a starting pitcher this month, as Justin Grimm is the winner in today’s 9 – 4 defeat of the A’s. The win comes by the skin of its teeth though, as Grimm is trailing 3 – 2 when he leaves after five innings, having just given up a three-run homer to Chris Young. However, his teammates rally for a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, and the bullpen preserves the lead until the end of the game. The Rangers had gone 17 straight games since Derek Holland had last won as a starter on May 31st, setting an unenviable team record.

The city of San Jose, CA files a suit in federal court against Major League Baseball and Commissioner Bud Selig, arguing it has suffered millions of dollars in damages because MLB has refused to allow the Oakland Athletics to move to a new ballpark there. The suit explicitly challenges baseball’s exemption from antitrust laws, which is the relic of a much-criticized Supreme Court decision dating back to 1922.

In the nitecap, rookie Zack Wheeler, 23, making his highly anticipated major league debut, pitches six shutout innings and strikes out 7 as the Mets win again, 6 – 1.

Seemingly asleep for 8 innings, the Mets suddenly wake up in the bottom of the 9th as Carlos Marmol is trying to protect a 3 – 0 lead for the Cubs. Marlon Byrd starts off the inning with a solo homer, Lucas Duda draws a walk and John Buck singles. Omar Quintanilla bunts both runners into scoring position before Kirk Nieuwenhuis, hitting .097 for the season, connects for a walk-off three-run homer. Marmol is only pitching because closer Kevin Gregg, who has been perfect in 10 save opportunities so far, is unavailable after pitching in the Cubbies’ last four games.
