Another day, another standout performance by Yasiel Puig, the Dodgers’ young Cuban outfielder, who has had a memorable first week in the Show. Puig hits his fourth homer in five games in the 5th, as Los Angeles wins against the Braves, 2 – 1, when pinch-runner Skip Schumaker scores on Anthony Varvaro’s wild pitch in the 10th.

Indians closer Chris Perez and his wife Melanie are charged with possession after police discover marijuana in suspicious packages mailed to the couple’s house. When asked by police, Perez leads them to his personal stash, stored in a couple of Mason jars in the house’s basement. Perez is expected to be given a fine by judicial authorities and ordered to undergo a treatment program by Major League Baseball.

Yasiel Puig continues to amaze in his first week in the majors, hitting a grand slam in the 8th inning of the Dodgers’ 5 – 0 win over the Braves. Zack Greinke is the winner with 7 innings of four-hit ball.

With John Sebastian’s song “Welcome Back” playing in the background, the Seattle fans give Ichiro Suzuki a warm reception when the longtime Mariner legend returns to Safeco Field as a Yankee. The 39 year-old outfielder, who hit .322 during his 12 seasons with the team, was traded to the Bronx last July for Danny Farquhar and D.J. Mitchell.

The Astros take Stanford University pitcher Mark Appel with the first overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft; Appel was a first-round selection in the 2012 draft, by the Pirates, but failed to come to terms. The Cubs follow by taking third baseman Kris Bryant from the University of San Diego. 15 of the top 20 picks are spent on pitchers.

The Rockies slam six homers, three of them by Carlos Gonzalez and two by Troy Tulowitzki, in beating the Reds, 12 – 4. Todd Helton hits the other long ball, while Nolan Arenado has four of the team’s 20 hits.

The White Sox and Mariners engage in a 16-inning contest, which is the longest home game in terms of time in M’s history, at 5 hours, 42 minutes. The game is scoreless through 13 innings, until the ChiSox post five runs in the 14th. With the score 5 – 1 in the bottom of the inning, Kyle Seager ties the game with his first career grand slam. This is the first game-tying extra-inning grand slam in Major League history. It also marks the first time that both teams have scored five or more runs after being shut out in regulation innings. In addition, it is the first time that any team has come back from five or more runs down in the 14th inning or later. An RBI single by Alejandro De Aza in the 16th inning puts the Pale Hose ahead, and he later scores an insurance run on another single by Alex Rios. Chicago wins, 7 – 5, snapping an eight-game losing streak the hard way.

The White Sox score five times in the top of the 14th inning, but the Mariners knot the score in the bottom of the frame thanks to Kyle Seager’s two-out, two-strike bases-loaded round-tripper. The third baseman’s homer, the first game-tying, extra-inning grand slam in major league history, isn’t enough when Chicago beats Seattle, 7-5, in the 16-inning Safeco Field contest that takes 5 hours 42 minutes to complete.

Only two days into his major league career Yasiel Puig is already building a legend. He hits two home runs and double and drives in five runs to lead the ­Dodgers to a 9 – 7 win over the Padres, one day after going 2 for 4 and displaying a cannon arm in right field in his debut.
