The Brewers hit five homers and three triples in a 10 – 4 win over the Pirates; they are the first team to get that particular combination of long hits since the Giants on May 13, 1958. Jean Segura and Carlos Gomez get a triple and a homer each, while P Yovani Gallardo hits his second homer and picks up his third win in three starts since being arrested for driving under the influence earlier this month.

The Marlins earn a rare victory, 4 – 3, over the Mets with a two-run rally in the bottom of the 15th inning. Ruben Tejada gives the Mets a 3 – 2 lead with an infield single off Jon Rauch in the top of the 15th, but the Fish come back on Rob Brantly’s single and Nick Green’s sacrifice fly against Shaun Marcum, the Mets’ ninth pitcher of the night. It is the first time Miami wins back-to-back games this year, but the win is costly as the team’s best hitter, Giancarlo Stanton, pulls a hamstring running out a ground ball in the 10th and is immediately placed on the disabled list.

In the first game of a day-night doubleheader, Jeremy Guthrie ties a franchise record by going 16 consecutive starts without a loss for the Royals. The 34 year-old right-hander works 6.2 innings without giving up a run in Kansas City’s 9-0 victory over Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium.

The Yankees complete a four-game sweep of Toronto with a 3 – 2 win at home. All four wins are come-from-behind, today’s being highlighted by a two-run homer by Lyle Overbay in the 7th. Jays ace R.A. Dickey, still complaining of a stiff neck and back, falls to 2-4 on the year and will undergo an MRI to find the source of the persisting discomfort.

The Pirates take the NL Central lead behind rookie Jeff Locke, who gives up only 3 hits and no runs over 7 innings, beating the Cardinals, 9 – 0. It is Pittsburgh’s 15th win in April, their best total since 1992. C Russell Martin hits a pair of homers to back up Locke’s pitching, while Clint Hurdle celebrates his 700th win as a big league manager.

Another rookie, Reds starter Tony Cingrani, has a big day, collecting 11 strikeouts, including four in the 4th inning, in six scoreless innings. He also gets his first career hit – a single off Ross Detwiler in the 2nd – as Cincinnati defeats the Nationals, 5 – 2. The four-strikeout inning is made possible when leadoff hitter Denard Span reaches first base on a dropped third strike by C Corky Miller.

Matt Moore (5-0) becomes the first pitcher in franchise history to win five games in April, when the Rays beat Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field, 10-4. The 23 year-old southpaw starter hurls six strong innings, allowing just a run and three hits while striking out nine Pale Hose batters.

Anibal Sanchez breaks Mickey Lolich’s franchise record of 16 strikeouts when he retires the side on strikes in the eighth inning of the Tigers’ 10-0 rout of Atlanta. In his eight innings of work, the 29 year-old Venezuelan right-hander gives up just five hits en route to his 17-strikeout performance in the Comerica Park contest.

The injury-plagued Yankees lose two more players, but continue to win. First, catcher Francisco Cervelli breaks his right hand when hit by a foul tip off Rajai Davis’s bat on the fifth pitch of the game, then starter Ivan Nova has to leave after two innings with pain in his elbow. David Phelps steps in ably, giving one run in 4 innings and striking out 9, as the Yanks defeat the Blue Jays, 6 – 4. Cervelli’s replacement, Chris Stewart, pitches in by throwing out a pair of Jays baserunners.

Jordan Zimmermann of the Nationals pitches his first career shutout in defeating the Reds, 1 – 0, on a one-hitter. Xavier Paul’s leadoff single in the 3rd is the only safety. Yesterday, Gio Gonzalez had given up only one hit in 8 innings and combined with Rafael Soriano for another one-hitter over the Reds.
