Danny Duffy pitches the best game of his career, taking a perfect game into the 7th inning before Adam Jones singles with two outs. His solid outing is necessary to make a 1st-inning Royals run stand up for a 1 – 0 win. Duffy is taken out of the game after allowing a lead-off single in the 8th, and the Orioles manage to load the bases in the 9th against Greg Holland before Nelson Cruz strikes out to end the game.

Penn State turns two triple plays in a loss to Michigan State University. They become only the second NCAA Division I team to turn two triple killings in a game, following Gonzaga University in 2006.

Johnny Cueto shuts out the Padres on three hits as the Reds win, 5 – 0. Cueto has now pitched at least 7 innings and given up 2 runs or less in all 9 of his starts this season; to find a pitcher with a longer such streak to start a year, one has to go all the way back to 1909 when Harry Krause did it for 10 games for the Philadelphia Athletics in the heart of the deadball era.

In his first major league outing, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom does something no other member of the pitching staff has been able to do yet this season: get a hit. His 3rd-inning single off Chase Whitley of the Yankees breaks a record 0-for-64 drought by Mets pitchers at the plate this season. DeGrom, who had been an infielder his first couple of years in college before becoming a pitcher, also pitches very well, allowing 1 run in 7 innings, but is a hard-luck loser, 1 – 0, as Whitley, Dellin Betances, Adam Warren and David Robertson combine on a three-hit shutout. Whitley, who is also making his big league debut, gives up no runs in 4 2/3 innings and also collects his first hit, off deGrom.

Masahiro Tanaka pitches his first major league shutout as the Yankees defeat the Mets, 4 – 0. The Japanese off-season signee is now 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA after 8 starts in the majors. The Yankees’ win follows 6 straight losses to the Mets, dating back to last season.

2014 – Two pitchers with long winless streaks face-off in tonight’s game between the Dodgers and Marlins. Josh Beckett records his first win since the 2012 season as he gives up a run in 6 2/3 innings in a 7 – 1 Dodgers win. His opponent, Jacob Turner extends his streak to 16 starts and is 0-10 on the road for his career, in spite of an ERA under 4.00.

Yankee right fielder Alfonso Soriano becomes only the seventh player to collect a thousand hits in both leagues when he singles off Mets starter Bartolo Colon in the bottom of the second inning of the team’s 9-7 loss at the Bronx ballpark. The 38 year-old Dominican outfielder, who is also the first major leaguer to record 100 HRs, 500 RBIs, 500 runs, and 100 RBIs in each circuit, joins Frank Robinson, Dave Winfield, Vladimir Guerrero, Fred McGriff, Orlando Cabrera, and Carlos Lee in reaching the milestone.

Aroldis Chapman, in his first appearance of the season, strikes out three consecutive batters after issuing a leadoff walk, recording a save in Cincinnati’s 4-1 victory over Colorado. During a spring training game in March against Kansas City, the Reds All-Star closer was struck in the head by a line drive that resulted in surgery to repair fractures near his nose and left eye.

Yu Darvish comes within one out of throwing a no-hitter as the Rangers’ ace allows a single to David Ortiz with two outs in the 9th. Darvish then comes out and Alexi Ogando retires Mike Napoli to end the game with Texas winning, 8 – 0, over the Red Sox. Ortiz had broken up Darvish’s bid for a perfect game two innings earlier when his pop fly to shallow right dropped between 2B Rougned Odor and RF Alex Rios in the 7th; Rios was charged with an error on that play, however, and Darvish allowed a couple of walks before facing Ortiz again. It’s a case of déjà vu for Darvish, as he has previously come within an out of a perfect game on April 2, 2013. On May 14th, Major League Baseball will overturn official scorer Steve Weller’s ruling on Ortiz’s 7th-inning blooper, calling it a hit as well.

The Blue Jays hit five homers in defeating the Phillies, 12 – 6, completing a three-game sweep. Edwin Encarnacion hits two of the long balls, including the 200th of his career, with Juan Francisco, Colby Rasmus and Adam Lind also connecting in support of starter R.A. Dickey.
