Ichiro Suzuki’s ninth-inning double in the Marlins’ 6-3 loss to the Padres at Petco Park raises his professional hit total to 4,257, surpassing Pete Rose’s all-time major league mark. The 42 year-old outfielder’s total includes the 1,278 hits he collected for Orix in Japan’s Pacific League.

Ichiro Suzuki collects a pair of hits in the Marlins’ 6 – 3 loss to the Padres. His 9th-inning double off Fernando Rodney is his 4,257th hit as a major leaguer, counting his time in Japan and the United States. This moves him ahead of Pete Rose for the all-time mark and brings him within 21 hits of the magic 3000 hit club in the U.S.

On the day SS Jose Reyes is eligible for reinstatement from his suspension following an off-season domestic violence incident, the Rockies decide to have him designated for assignment, eating approximately $40 million remaining on his contract. Rookie Trevor Story has emerged as a star during Reyes’ prolonged absence, prompting the Rockies to cut ties with the former All-Star.

2016 – Jake Arrieta of the Cubs loses to the Diamondbacks, 3 – 2. The L&D Amsterdam Pirates win the 2016 European Champions Cup for their first European Cup title. They beat the host ASD Rimini, 5-4, in 10 innings in the finale. Kenny Berkenbosch (.273/.500/.545) doubles in the last run and wins Cup MVP honors, while Kevin Heijstek turns in a strong start and Tom de Blok fans 2 of the last three batters to preserve the win. Jesse Aussems gets 3 hits in the finale, as does Rimini’s Ennio Retrosi (who fans to end the game). Roberto Corradini takes the loss.

The Padres trade P James Shields to the White Sox in return for 17-year-old infielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and P Erik Johnson. The Padres also pick up $31 million of the $58 million remaining on Shields’ four-year contract in order to move him.

The Marlins get some unwanted publicity when they are the first to publicly announce the death of boxing great Muhammad Ali on the Marlins Park scoreboard at the end of tonight’s game against the Mets. Team President David Samson had heard the news from a person close to Ali, but had not realized the family had not made the news public when he calls on the scoreboard operators to pay tribute.

Rookie SS Corey Seager hits three homers, all solo shots, in the Dodgers’ 4 – 2 win over the Braves.

2016 – Trailing the Padres 12 – 2 after five innings, the Mariners suddenly wake up and score 14 runs in two innings to escape with a 16 – 13 win, the biggest comeback in team history. In the 6th, Kyle Seager hits a two-run, bases loaded single, followed by a three-run pinch-hit homer by Dae-Ho Lee, then in the 7th the M’s score nine times to take the lead for good. For the Padres, the roller-coaster ride continues, as in consecutive games they have given up double-figure runs, scored double-figure runs, and then done both in the same game.

Indians OF Marlon Byrd is suspended for 162 games following the second positive test for PEDs of his career. At 39, it is unlikely that the former All-Star will return after serving his penalty.
