2017 – Andrew Romine of the Tigers becomes the 5th player to play all nine positions in a game, doing so on the road against the Twins. He only spends a third of an inning as the catcher – the only position he had never played before – but still manages to allow a passed ball. As a pitcher, however, he retires the only batter he faces, Miguel Sano, with the Tigers hanging on to a 3 – 2 lead in the bottom of the 8th. That will be the final score, as the Tigers get a rare win to close an awful month of September that saw them go 6-23.

With a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, Rockies OF Charlie Blackmon sets a new record for RBIs by a leadoff hitter with 101. The record was previously held by Darin Erstad, with 100. Blackmon adds another RBI later in the game as Colorado defeats the Dodgers, 9 – 1, to inch closer to confirming a postseason slot.

2017 – Giancarlo Stanton hits two homers in a 7 – 1 Marlins win over the Braves, to reach the total of 59 for the season with three games left to play. He is now within sight of Roger Maris’s total of 61 in 1961 which many observers consider as the “true” major league record, given that those who have eclipsed it have all been tainted by allegations of steroids use.

For the 10th straight year, Major League Baseball sets a new record for most strikeouts in a season, ending the day with 39,168, almost 200 more than the previous record of 38,982 set in 2016, with four days of games left. This goes hand-in-hand with the home run record set earlier this month.

In a conference call meeting, Major League Baseball owners approve the sale of the Miami Marlins by Jeffrey Loria to a group headed by Bruce Sherman and former player Derek Jeter.

2017 – In an otherwise meaningless game, Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen hits the first grand slam of his career off Kevin Gausman in the 2nd inning of a 10 – 1 Bucs win over the Orioles. It took McCutchen over 5,000 at-bats, during which he slugged 201 homers, before connecting for the first time with the bases loaded. He completes his night’s work with an RBI double in the 2nd, a single in the 5th after which he comes in to score, and a three-run homer in the 7th to finish with 8 RBIs, one shy of the franchise record.

2017 – The Cubs’ principal mid-season acquisition, P José Quintana, proves to be worth it as he shuts out the Brewers on three hits in a 5 – 0 win in the final game of a four-game series at Miller Park. By winning three of four against their closest rivals, the Cubs have increased their lead in the NL Central to 5 1/2 games and lowered their magic number to two.
