Winners of the Gold Glove awards in the major leagues are announced. There is significant turnover in the AL, as only RF Mookie Betts is a repeat winner, although five others have won the award in previous years. In the NL, both Nolan Arenado and Jason Heyward win their 5th, with Arenado’s awards coming consecutively.
2017 – WORLD CHAMPIONS!! The Houston Astros take the World Series for the first time in their history with a crushing 5-1 Game Seven triumph in Los Angeles. Series MVP George Springer doubles and homers off Yu Darvish to spark a five-run rally in the first two frames. Free agent pickup Charlie Morton tosses the final four innings in relief for the win after Lance McCullers and Brad Peacock split the first five. Star shortstop Carlos Correa caps the celebration with an on-field marriage proposal.
The Dodgers force a Game 7 in 2017 World Series with a 3 – 1 win over Houston in Game 6. The Dodgers manage to score twice against Justin Verlander in the 6th to negate a 3rd-inning homer by George Springer, then add an insurance run on a solo shot by Joc Pederson off Joe Musgrove in the 7th. Manager Dave Roberts once again leans heavily on his bullpen, removing Rich Hill after 4 2/3 innings, but four relievers keep the Astros off the board for the rest of the game, including closer Kenley Jansen who pitches the final two innings for his second save.
The Phillies name Gabe Kapler to be their new manager, replacing the recently fired Pete Mackanin.
2017 – Some have called it the greatest World Series game ever played. Whether so or not, the 5+ hours of play was like a heavyweight prizefight. Houston took Game Five in ten innings, 13-12, with the Astros coming back from deficits of 4-0 and 7-4 while the Dodgers bounced back from a 12-9 hole in the ninth to send the classic into overtime. The Astros bash five homers (Yuli Gurriel, Jose Altuve, George Springer, Carlos Correa, Brian McCann) yet it is a short single to left by Alex Bregman that plates pinch-runner Derek Fisher with the game-winner.
Game 5 of the 2017 World Series is another wild one, as the Astros defeat the Dodgers, 13 – 12, in 10 innings. The Astros come back from early deficits of 4 – 0 and 7 – 4, and the Dodgers are down 12 – 9 in the top of the 9th before forcing extra innings, when Alex Bregman drives in pinch-runner Derek Fisher with a hit to left field off Kenley Jansen to end the contest. The game takes 5 hours and 17 minutes and features 7 homers, for a record total of 22 in the series, with at least one more game to be played.
Reports emerge that the Nationals have hired Dave Martinez to be their new manager. Martinez was the bench coach for Joe Maddon with both the Rays and the Cubs and was a player with the Nats’ predecessors, the Montréal Expos.
2017 – Los Angeles blows open a tight 1-1 duel to score five times in the ninth, dropping the Astros, 6-2. Joc Pederson’s three-run homer off Joe Musgrove was the big blow. The World Series is tied at two games each.
Kenley Jansen of the Dodgers becomes the first repeat winner of the Trevor Hoffman Award, given to the best relief pitcher in the National League, while Craig Kimbrel of the Red Sox wins the equivalent award in the American League, the Mariano Rivera Award. With this win, Kimbrel becomes the first pitcher to have won both awards.
2017 – The Astros win Game 3 of the 2017 World Series at home, 5 – 3 over the Dodgers, behind a great combined pitching performance by Lance McCullers and Brad Peacock, who limit Los Angeles to 4 hits. The Astros chase Yu Darvish with 4 runs in the 2nd, but five relievers manage to keep the game close until the end, although the Dodgers’ bullpen is heavily taxed again, with 6 1/3 innings of work after having had to work 7 innings in Game 2.
