After a wide search with at least 11 candidates receiving serious consideration, the Rangers settle on Dodgers coach Chris Woodward as their new manager.
Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, one of the greatest stars in the history of the San Francisco Giants, dies at age 80. He won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1959 and the MVP Award in 1969.
The Mets hire prominent player agent Brodie Van Wagenen as their General Manager, replacing Sandy Alderson. Other GMs have worked briefly as agents in the past, but none so prominent as Van Wagenen, who heads his own firm, CAA Baseball, and has a number of his clients currently playing in the organization.
The Red Sox win their 9th Championship and 4th since 2004 by defeating the Dodgers, 5 – 1, in Game 5 of the World Series. David Price pitches 7 strong innings after allowing a lead-off homer to David Freese, but not before Boston had taken a 2 – 0 lead on a homer by Steve Pearce off Clayton Kershaw. Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez and Pearce all hit solo shots later in the game to put the score out of reach, while Joe Kelly and Chris Sale combine to strike out the last six Dodgers batters in order. Pearce is named winner of the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.
Edwin Diaz is named winner of the Mariano Rivera award as the best reliever in the American League while Josh Hader wins the equivalent Trevor Hoffman Award in the NL.
Down 4 – 0 after 6 innings, the Red Sox score 9 runs over the last three innings to win Game 4 of the World Series, 9 – 6 over the Dodgers. Yasiel Puig hits a three-run homer to help build Los Angeles’s lead, but a three-run pinch-homer by Mitch Moreland and a solo shot by Steve Pearce tie the game, before the Red Sox score 5 runs in the 9th to put the game away.
2018 – The Dodgers win a marathon Game 3 in the World Series, 3 – 2 over the Red Sox, on a walk-off homer by Max Muncy off Nathan Eovaldi to lead off the 18th inning. The game lasts 7 hour and 20 minutes and begins with a great start by Walker Buehler, who shuts out the Sox for 7 innings. But Los Angeles can only score one run on a solo homer by Joc Pederson in the 3rd, and in the 8th Boston ties the score on a two-out homer by Jackie Bradley off Kenley Jansen. The two teams trade runs in the 13th when the Dodgers manage to score on a two-out error by 2B Ian Kinsler. The score remains at 2 – 2 until Muncy ends the game as Eovaldi begins his 7th inning of work. The game’s total time and the 18 pitchers used are both postseason records.
The Twins introduce 37-year-old Rocco Baldelli as their new manager, taking over for local legend Paul Molitor. He has been a coach for the Tampa Bay Rays for the past four seasons, after a rare disease cut short his playing career.
The Blue Jays also name a manager, settling on long-time coach and minor league manager Charlie Montoyo, whose post-playing career has all been in the Tampa Bay Rays system.
2018 – The Red Sox take a two games to none lead over the Dodgers in the World Series with a 4 – 2 win at Fenway Park. David Price gives up just 3 hits in 6 innings, and J.D. Martinez drives in two runs with a bases-loaded single off Ryan Madson with two outs in the 5th to provide the margin of victory.
