In a 3 – 2 win over the Reds, the Dodgers homer in a 32nd consecutive home game at Dodger Stadium, courtesy of A.J. Pollock, dating back to August 21st last season. This ties the all-time record set by the 1999 Rockies.
Christian Yelich has a memorable day. First, before that night’s game against the Cardinals, he hand-delivers a new puppy to a couple of young girls, the result of a sign, which has since gone viral, that they had brought to the ballpark on March 30th. the sign stated that their dad would buy the older sister a puppy if Yelich hit a homer that day – which he had done. He then pads his home run total some more with the first three-homer game of his career, also driving in 7 runs, as the Brewers win, 10 – 7.
Misja Harcksen throws the third perfect game in Hoofdklasse history, 22 years after Eelco Jansen had last done the feat. He blanks his former teammates, the Oosterhout Twins, with 10 whiffs and 97 pitches, as Neptunus wins 4-0.
German Marquez throws the first complete game in the majors this season as he twirls a one-hitter to lead the Rockies to a 4 – 0 win over the Giants, snapping his team’s eight-game losing streak. Evan Longoria has the only hit against him, a single with one out in the 8th. Nolan Arenado hits a three-run homer to lead the offense, his first long ball of the year.
Derek Dietrich leads the Reds to a 5 – 2 win over the Cardinals in the first of two games played at Estadio Monterrey in Mexico. He homers off Adam Wainwright to lead off the 7th inning and break a 1 – 1 tie, then adds a two-run triple in the 8th.
2019 – Khris Davis hits his major league-leading 10th homer, a tie-breaking solo shot in the 8th, to lead the Athletics to an 8 – 6 win over the Rangers.
2019 – Dee Gordon hits a solo homer in the 6th inning and the Mariners set a new mark, having now homered in all 15 of their games this season, breaking the record held by the 2002 Indians; they also lead the majors with 35 long balls. Down 6 – 2 at one point, they come back to win 7 – 6 over the Royals in 10 innings and are now 13-2. In the game, Kansas City’s Whit Merrifield sees his club-record hitting streak snapped after 31 games.
2019 – The surprising Mariners continue to be the hottest team in the majors, improving to 12-2 with a 6 – 5 win over the Royals. Mitch Haniger hits a tie-breaking homer with two outs in the 9th, and Seattle has now homered in its first 14 games matching the 2002 Indians as the only two teams ever to do so. For Kansas City, which suffers its 9th straight loss, Whit Merrifield sets a new team record by extending his hitting streak to 31 games, dating back to last season, with a bunt single in the 7th. The record had previously been held by Royals legend George Brett.
After starting the season with 11 consecutive road games – and losing 8 of them – the Red Sox finally hold their home opener. The raise their World Series banner and their players receive their rings, but they lose again, 7 – 5 to the Blue Jays. On the positive side, Dustin Pedroia starts at second base in his first game since last May, and it is the first time ever that both managers hail from Puerto Rico: Alex Cora for Boston and Charlie Montoyo for Toronto.
The Trump Administration cancels an agreement reached in the previous December between Major League Baseball and the Cuban Baseball Federation that allows Cuban players to join organized baseball through a formal transfer process, as is the case with South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The current administration objects to the fact that transfer fees are being paid to the Federation; however, the agreement’s demise is likely to lead to a return of danger-fraught defections as the only path for Cuban players to reach the U.S.
