Ban Johnson dies after a long illness

On February 28, 1931,Ban JohnsonĀ dies inĀ St. Louis, at age 57. Johnson had served as the founder and first president of theĀ American LeagueĀ fromĀ 1901Ā toĀ 1927. He was a dynamic and dictatorial leader until subdued by the advent of JudgeĀ Kenesaw Mountain Landis, who took office as the firstĀ Baseball commissionerĀ in JanuaryĀ 1921. Johnson will gain election to theĀ Hall of FameĀ inĀ 1937.
