On April 24, 1962, Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers strikes out 18 Chicago Cubs in a 10-2 win. The hard-throwing future Hall of Famer ties the record of 18 strikeouts in a single game, matching the mark of former Cleveland Indians great Bob Feller.
The first game in franchise history against the visiting Cardinals features many familiar faces on the opposing team when the Colt .45’s beat the Redbirds, 4-3. Houston had been the farm club for St. Louis, and many of their players had come through Texas on their way to the big leagues.

On April 24, 1957, the Chicago Cubs set a National League record by walking nine batters in the fifth inning of a 9-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. Moe Drabowsky walks four batters, Jackie Collum issues three free passes, and Jim Brosnan walks two during the wild inning.
1956 – American League umpire Frank Umont is the first to wear glasses in a regular-season game when he officiates a contest between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Athletics. A former NFL tackle for the New York Giants, Umont still presents an intimidating appearance to most players and fans.
4/24/1955: In the second game of a scheduled double-header, Dee Fondy and Harry Chiti of the Cubs both hit home runs off Reds pitcher Corky Valentine in the bottom of the second inning. The game was rained out in the bottom of the third inning with Chicago leading 3-0.
Giants right-hander Marv Grissom blanks the Phillies at the Polo Grounds, 1-0. Whitey Lockman’s 300-foot fifth-inning home run off Robin Roberts, one of only three hits the Philadelphia hurler allows, accounts for the only score of the game.
