1968 – Tom Phoebus of the Baltimore Orioles pitches a 6 – 0 no hitter against the visiting Boston Red Sox. Third baseman Brooks Robinson drives in three runs and makes a great catch to rob Rico Petrocelli of a hit in the 8th inning.
1967 – Joe Morgan keys a five-run outburst with a bases-loaded triple off Hal Woodeshick that drops the Cardinals, 6-4. The win ends a ten-game losing streak, their longest since 1963.
1967 – Reliever Bill Short and right fielder Roberto Clemente preserve Pittsburgh’s come-from-behind, ulcer-inducing 5 – 4 victory over their cross-state rivals. Les Biederman of the Pittsburgh Press reports: “The Phils tried to get going after Pete Mikkelsen retired the first two batters in the 9th and what remained of the crowd of 4,979 stood in the aisles. Mikkelsen dared Richie Allen with a fastball and fanned him for the second out but Tony Gonzalez rammed a line drive into the right-center hole. Usually this is good for a double, maybe a triple if the ball gets through. But Clemente dived at the ball and came up throwing to second base as Gonzalez wisely stopped at first. Cookie Rojas followed with a single to left. Had Gonzalez’s ball gone through for a double, Rojas’ single would have scored him with the tying run. Bill Short came in to pitch to Johnny Callison and walked him on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases but then he got Jackie Brandt on a slow roller for the final out.” Pittsburgh pulls even in the game during Clemente’s two-out 7th-inning at-bat, but he is a mere spectator: a wild pitch from Larry Jackson and an errant throw from Bob Uecker account for the two equalizing runs.
Red Sox right-hander Gene Conley and White Sox hurler Dave DeBusschere, who both played in the NBA in the offseason, each pitch in relief during the fourth inning of the Red Sox’s 9-5 victory over the White Sox at Fenway Park. Conley, now with the Knicks as a power guard, is the only person to have played on World Championship teams in baseball (1957 Braves) and basketball (1959–61, Celtics), and DeBusschere, currently employed by the Pistons, will be inducted as player into the basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.
On April 27, 1947, the New York Yankees hold Babe Ruth Day at Yankee Stadium. A crowd of 58,339 attends the ceremony at “The House That Ruth Built” to honor the game’s all-time home run leader, who is dying of throat cancer. Ruth will succumb the following summer…
On April 27, 1944, Boston Braves knuckleballer Jim “Abba Dabba” Tobin no-hits the Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0. Tobin hits a home run to support his own cause, becoming the first pitcher to go deep in his own no-hitter.
On April 27, 1937, Cardinals’ trainer Doc Weaver uses a video camera to record his team in action during a practice. Manager Frankie Frisch later uses the film to work with his players on their fundamentals. It’s one of the earliest uses of video for training purposes in the major leagues.
Cardinal manager Gabby Street is fined for violating the National League policy which prohibits talking to spectators. The Redbird skipper’s nickname suggests he might be a chatterbox, but he insists the moniker stems his overuse of the word Gabby, a term used in the south when addressing a black male whose name is unknown.
Bud Clancy, playing first base during the entire nine-inning game, never touches the ball while it is in play. The first sacker’s lack of work doesn’t hurt the White Sox when they beat the Browns at Sportsman’s Park, 2-1.
1929 – Brooklyn Robins relief pitcher Clise Dudley hits a home run on the first major league pitch he sees at Philadelphia’s Baker Bowl.
