1982 – Down 1 – 0 to the Braves in the 3rd, Padres OF Gene Richards hits a long fly ball down the LF line that Terry Harper spears at the last second. But Harper’s momentum carries him out of bounds where he hits the railing dropping the ball. Meanwhile the speedy Richards circles the bases. The umpire rules Harper did not hold the ball long enough for an out and he is charged with a four-base error (later overruled by the League office to an inside-the-park home run for Richards). Pascual Perez misses his start for the Braves when he gets lost on Interstate 285, trying to find Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The 25 year-old right-hander, who will be called I-285 by his Atlanta teammates, finally gets to the ballpark, 10 minutes after the game starts.
On July 30, 1982, the Atlanta Braves remove mascot “Chief Noc-a-homa” and his teepee from left field to make room for more seating at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium. The Braves will lose 19 of their next 21 games before restoring the mascot and teepee.
