After Boston manager Jimmy Collins takes a vacation without permission, he is suspended. Chick Stahl is named acting manager.
August 29, 1878 – Boston pulls another out of the fire‚ coring 4 in the bottom of the 10th to beat Chicago‚ 8-7. Bob Ferguson‚ catching for the Whites‚ makes 5 errors and passed balls in the final frame. Ezra Sutton caps the scoring with a game-winning homer‚ his only Homerun of the year.
The Brooklyn Eckfords replace the Fort Wayne Kekiongas in the NA after the Kekiongas lose most of their players to defection and expulsion. Fort Wayne’s unplayed games will be declared forfeits in the official standings. The Eckfords will officially join the National Association for the 1872 season.
