The contest marks the second time in ten games the Dodgers have been unable to get a hit, after being held hitless by Astros right-hander Mike Fiers on August 21.
2014 – Scott Feldman tosses a complete-game three-hitter to blank the Rangers, 2-0. The win secures a Lone Star Series victory over Arlington for the first time since 2006. Carlos Corporan and Jake Marisnick drive home runs in the seventh for the game’s only tallies.
The Angels use eight different pitchers – a team record for a nine-inning game – in shutting out the A’s, 2 – 0. Reliever Cory Rasmus gets things going by pitching the first three innings, and a different pitcher is used for each of the last 5 innings. In the 4th, Michael Roth gets himself in a bases loaded, one out jam, but Yoslan Herrera induced Jonny Gomes to hit into an inning-ending double play and is the one who ends up with credit for the win. Ironically, for the A’s, Jeff Samardzija throws a complete game but loses, a loss that increases the Angels’ lead in the AL West to four games.
Jake Peavy pitches no-hit ball for the Giants until one out in the 8th, before Mark Reynolds of the Brewers breaks up his bid for immortality with a single. He also records the 2000th strikeout of his career in the 3 – 1 win.
Trevor Hoffman, who spent parts of 16 seasons of his 18 years in the majors with San Diego, retiring as baseball’s all-time saves leader with 601, becomes the ninth person inducted into the Padres’ Hall of Fame. The closer, known for his devastating changeup, joins Buzzie Bavasi, Nate Colbert, Jerry Coleman, Tony Gwynn, Randy Jones, Ray Kroc, Dick Williams, and Dave Winfield to be enshrined by the team.
Several teams make moves shortly before the playoff roster deadline, as the Indians get Jason Kubel for a player to be named later or cash from the Diamondbacks, St. Louis picks up John Axford from the Brewers for a player to be named, and Baltimore gets Michael Morse from Seattle for Xavier Avery.

The Athletics complete a four-game sweep of the Indians with a 12 – 7 win at Progressive Field, their 8th victory in their last 9 games. As a result, they remain one game ahead of Baltimore in the race for the second wild card. The Indians continue their free fall, with a record of 5-27 since July 27th. Things start well for Cleveland, as Jason Kipnis hits a lead-off homer off Jarrod Parker, but the A’s tee off on Justin Masterson for 3 homers and 8 runs in 4 innings. George Kottaras and Josh Reddick drive in three runs apiece, while Coco Crisp and Cliff Pennington hit two-run homers
CC Sabathia finally defeats the Red Sox this season, after going 0-4 with a 7.20 ERA in his previous efforts against them this year. The Yankees win, 5 – 2, at Fenway Park to move to within a half-game of the lead in the AL East. In a moment typical of the tense rivalry between the two teams, Francisco Cervelli hits only the third home run of his career for the Yanks in the 5th, then is plunked by Sox starter John Lackey in his next at-bat, leading to both benches clearing and the ejection of New York pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
