Responding to Chicago’s protest that Eastern teams helped Boston capture the circuit’s championship, the National League rules the title still belongs to the Beaneaters. The pennant winners won 23 of their last 30 games, including 18 in a row.
The Brooklyn Bridegrooms, who will later be known as the Dodgers, play their first National League game. At South End Grounds, the former American Association club loses to the host Boston Beaneaters, 15 – 9. Brooklyn would go on to win the pennant in their first season in a new league, following their title in a different major league the previous season.
1889 – The Cleveland Spiders defeat the Boston Beaneaters, 19 – 8, behind a great hitting performance by Larry Twitchell, who goes 6-for-6 with a walk. He hits for the cycle and accumulates a then-record 16 total bases, thanks to a single, a double, three triples and a homer and scores 5 runs. Kid Madden pitches the whole game for Boston, surrendering 27 hits, but Twitchell also takes the mound, relieving Jersey Bakely in the 2nd inning after he has started the frame with four walks and a hit batsman. He then goes back to playing left field in the 3rd and Henry Gruber finishes the game on the mound.
1889 – A two-run single by Dick Johnston in the 10th inning gives Boston a 4 – 2 win over the Quakers. The win is the 9th in a row and 16th out of 17 for the Beaneaters‚ who lead 2nd place Philadelphia by 5 1/2 games.
1889 – Veteran outfielder Joe Hornung is released by the Boston Beaneaters after eight years with that club. According to The Sporting News, “Ubbo’s unruly tongue was the principal cause of his release.”
June 29, 1888 – The Boston Beaneaters release vets Ezra Sutton and Jack Burdock. Both players have been in the NL since its start in 1876 and had been with Boston for a decade.
