Troy O’Leary collects a grand slam and a three-run home run, both following an intentional pass to Nomar Garciaparra, contributing to the Red Sox’ 12-8 victory at Cleveland’s Jacobs Field.
1999 – The Boston Red Sox set an all-time postseason record by scoring 23 runs in defeating the Cleveland Indians, 23 – 7. The win ties their American League Division Series at two games apiece. Boston gets 24 hits in the contest, including five by Mike Stanley and four each by John Valentin and Jason Varitek. Valentin hits a pair of home runs with seven RBI, while Jose Offerman and Trot Nixon have two RBI each.
The Red Sox trip the Yankees, 3 – 1, as Pedro Martinez hurls an impressive one-hitter for his 21st victory of the year. Martinez strikes out 17 batters, the most Yankees ever fanned in a single game. DH Chili Davis’ 2nd-inning home run is New York’s only safety. Chuck Knoblauch, leading off the game, gives the Yankees their only other baserunner; he is caught stealing, so Martinez faces just one over the minimum.
The Red Sox defeat the Royals, 9 – 6, as Boston P Tim Wakefield ties a major league record by striking out four batters in the 9th inning. Kansas City C Chad Kreuter gets two hits in the game, his first breaking a streak of 38 consecutive at bats without a hit. It is the longest hitless streak in the majors since Dann Howitt of Oakland and Seattle went 0 for 43 in 1992.
The Red Sox blast seven home runs, one shy of the club record, in an 11-4 rout of Detroit at Tiger Stadium. Boston right fielder Trot Nixon contributes to the offensive onslaught with three home runs and five RBIs.

1999 – Boston Red Sox outfielder Midre Cummings has his arbitration case heard by Elizabeth Neumeier. It is the first arbitration case in MLB history to be decided by a female arbitrator. Since the arbitration rule went into effect in 1974, all 409 cases have been decided by men.
1998 – The ball thrown by Boston Red Sox pitcher Howard Ehmke and hit by Babe Ruth for the first home run in Yankee Stadium history is sold at an auction for $126,500 (110,000 bid + 15% commission). Mark Scala found the 1923 historic ball in the attic of his grandmother’s home several years ago.
