On January 3, 1923, the New York Yankees steal another standout player from the Boston Red Sox, acquiring pitcher Herb Pennock for Norm McMillan, George Murray, Camp Skinner and $50,000 in cash. 1923 – The Yankees pluck two rookies from the Red Sox, pitcher George Pipgras and outfielder Harvey Hendrick, in exchange for backup catcher Al DeVormer.
1922 – In a game between Chicago and Boston, 35 singles are hit – 21 by the White Sox, 14 by the Red Sox – an American League record. Chicago wins the hit parade, 19 – 11.
At Boston, Ty Cobb gets five hits (and a walk) in a game for the 4th time this year, setting an American League mark. His previous 5-hit contests were on May 7th, July 7th, and July 12th. Only Willie Keeler has done it before. The Tigers roar, 16 – 7. overcoming a 5 – 0 deficit after one inning.
1922 – The following round-robin deal benefits everyone: Roger Peckinpaugh goes from the Boston Red Sox to the Washington Senators; Joe Dugan, from the Philadelphia Athletics to Boston; and Bing Miller and Jose Acosta, from Washington to Philadelphia. Acosta will be sold to the Chicago White Sox on February 4th.
Walter Johnson, in an 11-inning complete-game losing effort against Philadelphia, fans seven A’s batters to surpass Cy Young’s major league mark of 2,803 career strikeouts. In 1927, the ‘Big Train’ will finish his 21-year tenure with the Senators with 3,509 punch outs, a record which will last for 62 seasons when it is broken by Nolan Ryan in 1983.
In the Labor Day afternoon game at Boston, won by the Red Sox, 8 – 2, the Yankees outfield makes an American League-record five assists, four by Bob Meusel. Meusel, with one of the strongest arms, will lead the AL in assists in 1921 and 1922.
At the age of 34, Ty Cobb becomes the youngest player to collect 3000 hits when he singles off of Red Sox hurler Elmer Myers. The ‘Georgia Peach’ will end his career with 4,191 hits, the most ever in the major leagues until Pete Rose surpasses the mark in 1985.
With new U.S. President Warren G. Harding, former president Woodrow Wilson, and VP Calvin Coolidge watching, the Washington Senators lose their home opener, 6 – 3, to the Boston Red Sox. Senators pitcher Walter Johnson leaves after four innings, the first time he has failed to finish an Opening Game.
1921 – Twelve-year Boston Red Sox veteran outfielder Harry Hooper is traded to the Chicago White Sox for outfielders Nemo Leibold and Shano Collins.
