1929 – The Philadelphia Athletics rally for three runs in the 9th inning to beat the Chicago Cubs, 3 – 2, and take the World Series in five games. A two-run home run by Mule Haas ties the game and Bing Miller hits a RBI double to get the victory. There won’t be another winning rally by a team down two runs in the 9th inning of a Series final game in the 20th century. The Arizona Diamondbacks, in 2001, will do it next.
The Cubs become the first National League team to win a Fall Classic contest since 1926 when the Redbirds beat New York in Game 7. Chicago breaks the Senior Circuit’s ten-game World Series skid in Game 3 with a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia at Shibe Park.
In front of 50,000 fans at Wrigley Field, surprise starter Howard Ehmke establishes a new World Series record, striking out 13 Cubs en route to a 3-1 A’s victory in Game 1 of the Fall Classic. The mark will last for 34 years until Dodger hurler Carl Erskine fans 14 Yankees in 1953.
In a Ladies Day game at Wrigley Field that draws 29,000 women and 11,000 men, the Cubs have their five-game win streak stopped by Brooklyn, 5 – 4, despite Rogers Hornsby’s 23rd home run of the year. Brooklyn’s Johnny Morrison is the winner over Chicago ace Pat Malone. But Chicago will win its next three.

The rain during the pregame ceremony at the Polo Grounds doesn’t dampen the spirits of the enthusiastic crowd of 25,000 fans, which includes Mayor Jimmy Walker, many former players, Commissioner Landis, George M. In the fourth inning of a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, shortstop Jimmy Cooney of the Chicago Cubs catches a line drive off Paul Waner, steps on second base to retire Lloyd Waner and then tags Clyde Barnhart coming from first base for an unassisted triple play. This is the second time Cooney has participated in an unassisted triple play; the first time came as a victim in Glenn Wright’s triple killing on May 7, 1925.
The St. Louis Cardinals pick up future Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander, who was placed on waivers by the Cubs. The acquisition of ‘Old Pete’ will prove to be pivotal to the Cardinals as he goes 9-7 down the stretch and helped seal their World Series triumph over the Yankees when the 39 year-old right-hander wins Games 2 and 6 and saves Game 7 of the Fall Classic.
