Hall of Famers Iron Joe McGinnity and Christy Mathewson spilt a double header vs the Cubs

At the Polo Grounds, a crowd of 19,000 is on hand for the twin bill with Chicago; Iron Joe McGinnity wins the opener, 5 – 4, in 10 innings, over Jack Taylor. But Chicago takes the nightcap, scoring six runs against Christy Mathewson in the 9th inning to enable Jock Menefee to pick up a win, 10 – 6. Matty gives up 13 hits and 10 runs in losing his 4th game of the year.

“Baseball’s Sad Lexicon,” better known as “Tinker to Evers to Chance” plays their first game

Johnny Evers, acquired to replace second baseman Bobby Lowe, who broke his ankle, joins shortstop Joe Tinker and first baseman Frank Chance on the Chicago infield, marking the first time the three Cubs’ infielders have played together. The legendary double play trio will be immortalized in Franklin Pierce Adams’ baseball poem, “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon,” better known as “Tinker to Evers to Chance”.

1902 – The nickname Cubs is coined by the Chicago Daily News, when an unbylined column notes that manager Frank Selee will devote his strongest efforts on the team work of the new “Cubs” this year. In time, the Cubs will replace the Colts as the nickname for the Chicago National League club.
