Just two and a half months after a fire destroyed the old Polo Grounds, the new grounds open for business. The old bleachers, seating 10,000, were untouched, but the new double-decker grandstand seats another 16,000. Only 6,000 fans show up for the inauguration as Christy Mathewson shuts out the Rustlers, 3 – 0, on nine hits. On the front end of a double steal, Mathewson swipes home in the 4th inning. While guests at the Highlanders’ Hilltop Park, the Giants won 21 of 29 games.
The New York Giants score a major league record 10 runs before the St. Louis Cardinals retire the first batter in the 1st inning. Fred Merkle drives in six of the Giants’ 13 runs in the 1st en route to a 19 – 5 victory. When Giants manager John McGraw decides to save starting pitcher Christy Mathewson for another day, Rube Marquard enters the game in the 2nd inning and sets a record for relievers (since broken) with 14 strikeouts in his eight-inning appearance.
1910 – In another matchup of aces, the Giants score four runs in the 1st inning off Three Finger Brown, who is lifted after six innings, trailing, 5 – 1. The Cubs rally against Christy Mathewson, and score two runs in both the 8th and 9th innings to tie. Larry Doyle, whose sloppy play helped the Cubs score, singles home the winning run for New York in the bottom of the 9th. Despite the Cubs tying the game after his departure, Brown is handed the loss.
1910 – Christy Mathewson stops the Bucs on five hits, as the Giants top Pittsburgh, 3 – 1, to move a half-game behind the 2nd-place Pirates. Lefty Leifield takes the loss.
1910 – At the Polo Grounds, Christy Mathewson allows seven hits in beating the Boston Doves, 2 – 0. Sam Frock is hung with the loss.
At the Polo Grounds, Christy Mathewson relieves in the 9th with the Giants ahead of the Phils, 2 – 0. The Quakers rattle Matty for four hits and two runs to tie, but in the bottom of the 10th, Mathewson lines a single to score Fred Merkle with the game winner.
On September 16, 1909, William Howard Taft becomes the first U.S. President to attend a major league game. President Taft watches Christy Mathewson and the New York Giants defeat the Cubs in Chicago, 2-1. Mathewson outduels another Hall of Famer, Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown.
Christy Mathewson and catcher Chief Meyers are all that the Giants need in the opener against Brooklyn. Matty allows three hits in shutting down the Superbas, and the Chief clubs his first major league homer in the 2nd inning, a grand slam to score all the runs. New York wins, 4 – 0, beating Elmer Knetzer. The Superbas take the nitecap, 10 – 1, behind Bugs Raymond. Rookie Zack Wheat has his first two major league hits in the nitecap, after being collared in the opener by Matty.
1909 – The Cubs and Giants swap shutouts in this Monday doubleheader. Chicago wins the opener, 2 – 0, in 11 innings, and Christy Mathewson outpitches Ed Reulbach in the nitecap to win, 5 – 0, on five hits.
