The Red Sox win their 9th Championship and 4th since 2004 by defeating the Dodgers, 5 – 1, in Game 5 of the World Series. David Price pitches 7 strong innings after allowing a lead-off homer to David Freese, but not before Boston had taken a 2 – 0 lead on a homer by Steve Pearce off Clayton Kershaw. Mookie Betts, J.D. Martinez and Pearce all hit solo shots later in the game to put the score out of reach, while Joe Kelly and Chris Sale combine to strike out the last six Dodgers batters in order. Pearce is named winner of the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.
2018 – While two of the best pitchers in the majors face off on the mound in Game 1 of the World Series in Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale, the contest turns out to be a high-scoring affair, with Boston prevailing, 8 – 4, over the Dodgers. Andrew Benintendi has 4 hits to lead the Red Sox attack while Eduardo Nunez hits a key three-run homer in the 7th and Craig Kimbrel closes out the win.
The Brewers try a rare ploy in Game 5 of the NLCS as lefty starter Wade Miley is pulled after facing just one Dodgers batter and replaced by righty Brandon Woodruff. This works for five innings, but the Dodgers score twice in the 6th and twice in the 7th to back up a strong performance by Clayton Kershaw and win the game, 5 – 2.
2018 – The Brewers take advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Dodgers that includes two passed balls and three errors, including two by C Yasmani Grandal, and a home run by reliever Brandon Woodruff, to take an early 5 – 1 lead against ace Clayton Kershaw. Los Angeles comes back with four runs in the last two innings, but fall short, as Milwaukee wins Game 1 of the NLCS, 6 – 5.
Four Division Series games are played today. In the first NLDS, the Brewers continue to shut down the Rockies’ offence in Game 2, winning 4 – 0. The game is a tight 1 – 0 contest until Milwaukee scores three runs in the bottom of the 8th to pull away, as Jhoulys Chacin is a winner over Tyler Anderson and Jeremy Jeffress gets the save. In the other NLDS, Clayton Kershaw pitches 8 scoreless innings as the Dodgers record their second straight shutout over the Braves, 3 – 0. A two-run homer by Manny Machado off Anibal Sanchez in the 1st and a solo shot by Yasmani Grandal in the 5th account for all the scoring.
2018 – For the second straight day, the Giants defeat the Dodgers, 1 – 0, thanks to a solo homer by 2B Joe Panik. After pulling the trick against ace Clayton Kershaw on Opening Day yesterday, Panik connects off closer Kenley Jansen in the 9th inning, after starter Alex Wood had limited the Giants to one hit over the first eight frames. The Dodgers manage just one hit off three Giants pitchers, but will get their revenge over the next two days, defeating the Giants by a combined score of 14-0.
2017 – On an unseasonably warm day in Los Angeles, CA where the temperature is above 100 degrees at game time, the Dodgers defeat the Astros, 3 – 1, in Game 1 of the World Series as Clayton Kershaw is the winner over Dallas Keuchel. All four runs score as the result of long balls, and Justin Turner’s two-run shot with two outs in the 6th is the difference maker after Chris Taylor and Alex Bregman trade solo shots.
2017 – The Dodgers are headed to the World Series for the first time since 1988 with an 11 – 1 win over the Cubs in Game 5 of the NLCS. They chase José Quintana in the 3rd inning, before Kiké Hernandez delivers the killer blow with a grand slam against Hector Rondon, his second homer of the game, which extends the lead to 7 – 0. Hernandez adds a third homer in the 9th to complete a great day. Chicago scores its only run on a solo homer by Kris Bryant off Clayton Kershaw, who picks up the win with 6 strong innings. Justin Turner and Chris Taylor share the NLCS MVP Award.
