On September 15, 1921, four Philadelphia A’s pitchers combine to issue 16 walks in a game against the Cleveland Indians. Arliss Taylor, making his only major league appearance, strikes out Joe Sewell, one of the best contact hitters in history. The A’s lose, 17-3.
Browns pitcher Urban Shocker takes his first loss after winning nine in a row. Elmer Smith’s two home runs pace a 10 – 5 Indians win in a morning game to back Guy Morton’spitching. In the afternoon game, a 12 – 8 St. Louis win, Smith starts off with another homer. Having hit one in Detroit the day before, Smith has seven straight extra base hits in three games – a major league record – for 22 total bases (3 doubles, four home runs, in addition to two walks). Earl Sheely, in 1926, will have seven long hits in just two games, but he will sandwich those around a sacrifice fly.
On June 6, 1921, New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth becomes the 20th-century home run leader. Ruth, who connects on his 120th career home run against Cleveland Indians pitcher Jim Bagby, will finish his career with 714 home runs – a major league record until it is surpassed by Hank Aaron.

1920 – Hall of Famer Stan Coveleski of the Cleveland Indians wins his third game of the World Series, a 3 – 0 shutout of the Brooklyn Robins. The victory gives the Indians the World Championship, five games to two.
1920 – In Game 6 of the World Series, Brooklyn’s P Sherry Smith gives up a 6th-inning single to Tris Speaker and double to George Burns. That’s all the scoring for the day, as Brooklyn reject Duster Mails yields three hits for a 1 – 0 win and 4-2 lead for Cleveland in the best-of-nine series.
Indians’ Bill Wambsganss becomes the only player in World Series history to complete an unassisted triple play when he makes a leaping catch, steps on second base, and then tags the runner arriving from first base. After the play, a dead calm engulfs Cleveland’s League Park as the hometown fans try to digest what they had just witnessed.
1920 – Several hours before the start of Game 4 of the World Series, Brooklyn’s Rube Marquard, a Cleveland native, is arrested when he tries to sell a ticket to an undercover cop for $350. He will be found guilty and fined a dollar and court costs ($3.80). For their first World Series game on the lakefront, 25,734 Indians fans watch their home team score 2 in the 1st and 2 in the 3rd off Leon Cadore and Al Mamaux. Cleveland wins the game, 5 – 1.
1920 – Before the start of the World Series, Brooklyn owner Charles Ebbets gives his approval for the addition of rookie Joe Sewell to the Indians’ roster. Sewell joined the team after September 1st and was not eligible for the series. The tradition of low-scoring World Series games continues when the Cleveland Indians manage to collect only five hits off Brooklyn Robins starter Rube Marquard and two relievers. Stan Coveleski gives the Indians a 3 – 1 opening victory with a five-hit complete game
