1988 – The Oakland Athletics complete a four-game sweep in the American League Championship Series by beating the Boston Red Sox, 4 – 1. Jose Canseco ties a playoff record with his third home run of the Series and Dennis Eckersley sets a major league playoff mark with his fourth save.
In the Oakland Athletics’ 39th game of the season, pitcher Dave Stewart breaks a major league record committing his 12th balk of the season in a 4 – 1 loss to the Red Sox. Stewart will extend the record with 16 balks during the year.
1986 – Pitcher Dave Stewart, who went 9-5 for the Oakland Athletics after being released by the Phillies in May, signs a two-year contract with Oakland.
1981 – Alan Ashby, as if waiting a year for revenge, slams a two-out two-run homer off Dave Stewart in the ninth to stun the Dodgers, 3-1, in Game One of their divisional playoff series . Tony Scott had driven in Terry Puhl earlier but Los Angeles ties it up on a solo shot from Steve Garvey, one of just two hits given up by Nolan Ryan.
