At Cincinnati peace talks, the National League proposes a consolidated 12-team league, which the American League rejects. An agreement is reached to coexist peacefully if the AL promises to stay out of Pittsburgh, PA. In the awarding of disputed contracts, the most hotly-contested case is that of Sam Crawford, a Reds outfielder who batted .333 and led the NL with 23 triples in 1902. Signed for 1903 by both the Tigers and the Reds, Crawford is awarded to the Tigers, having signed with them first. He will lead the AL in triples this year with 25.

Philadelphia’s Rube Waddell allows three hits in edging the Tigers, 1 – 0, in the opener of a doubleheader. Waddell then pitches the nitecap as well, giving up eight hits before losing, 2 – 1.

The Detroit Tigers roll over Cleveland behind Ed Siever with what was the most lopsided score in American League history: 21 – 0 (equaled on August 13, 1939) — until the Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees 22 – 0 on August 31, 2004 at Yankee Stadium. Detroit pounds out 24 hits off rookie Jack Bracken as Pop Dillon leads the way with four hits. The game is mercifully called after 7 1/2 innings to allow Cleveland to catch a train. Bracken’s ERA is not helped by this outing and he will end this season, his only one in the majors, with a 6.21 mark, the highest in the deadball era.
