Chicago Cubs outfielder Jerome Walton wins the 1989 National League Rookie of the Year Award

1989 – Chicago Cubs outfielder Jerome Walton wins the 1989 National League Rookie of the Year Award, collecting 22 of 24 first-place votes to defeat teammate Dwight Smith. They are the first NL’ers to finish 1-2 in the voting since Philadelphia Phillies rookies Jack Sanford and Ed Bouchee in 1957. Walton also becomes the first Cubs player to win rookie honors since Billy Williams, in 1961.

In the second of two games, the Pirates, down 5 – 0, tie the Phillies in the 9th inning, then win in the 10th, 7 – 6. The victory goes to Elroy Face, even though he gives up a home run to Ed Bouchee in the top of the 10th. Face is now 17-0 and the Pirates are just four games in back of the leading Giants.

1957 – Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jack Sanford, who posted a 19-8 record with 188 strikeouts and a 3.08 ERA, is named National League Rookie of the Year. Sanford beats out his teammate, first baseman Ed Bouchee.
