1971 – Don Wilson fires a two-hitter to outduel Ferguson Jenkins and Chicago, 2-1. Denis Menke doubles home Doug Rader then scores on a single by Jesus Alou. Houston fans boo Joe Pepitone in each of four hitless trips to the plate.
1971 – Chicago great Ferguson Jenkins is sailing along with a four-hit shutout and a 1-0 lead through eight innings when the Astros win without hitting a ball past the infield. Cesar Cedeno’s scratch hit starts it off. Two walks later, Cedeno bluffs a break for the plate which causes Jenkins to balk home the tying run. Jenkins then misplays Roger Metzger’s botched squeeze bunt for an error as Cesar Geronimo scores the game-winner.
1968 – New York’s Jim McAndrew finally wins one, beating the Cubs, 1 – 0, on two hits. It is Fergie Jenkins’ 5th 1 – 0 loss of the season, which ties a major league record. Despite the loss, Jenkins will win 20 for the second straight year, using a club record-tying 40 starts to do it.
1967 – San Francisco Giants pitcher Mike McCormick, the National League leader with 22 victories, is honored with the 1967 National League Cy Young Award. It is the first year in which pitchers are honored in both leagues.
After Chicago’s 4-1 victory over Cincinnati at Wrigley Field, many of the 40,464 patrons stay in the ballpark awaiting the outcome of the Cards/Mets game that, thanks to a New York victory, results with the Cubs in first place by half of a game. The enthusiastic fans refuse to leave the ‘Friendly Confines’ until the flags above the scoreboard reflect the home team’s current position at the top of the standings, a task usually done the next day.
Two days after putting on a Chicago Cubs uniform, Ferguson Jenkins hits his first major league home run, off Don Sutton, drives in a second run, and shuts out the Dodgersto win, 2 – 0. For rookie Sutton, it is the first of 13 straight losses the Cubs will hand him.
Phils rookie Ferguson Jenkins debuts with 4 1/3 innings of relief against the Cardinals and picks up his first victory. Philadelphia wins, 5 – 4, in 12 innings. It is the Phillies’ 10,000th game decision since 1900.
