The Dodgers manage to score twice against Justin Verlander in the 6th to negate a 3rd-inning homer by George Springer, then add an insurance run on a solo shot by Joc Pederson off Joe Musgrove in the 7th. Manager Dave Roberts once again leans heavily on his bullpen, removing Rich Hill after 4 2/3 innings, but four relievers keep the Astros off the board for the rest of the game, including closer Kenley Jansen who pitches the final two innings for his second save.

The Astros come back from early deficits of 4 – 0 and 7 – 4, and the Dodgers are down 12 – 9 in the top of the 9th before forcing extra innings, when Alex Bregman drives in pinch-runner Derek Fisher with a hit to left field off Kenley Jansen to end the contest. The game takes 5 hours and 17 minutes and features 7 homers, for a record total of 22 in the series, with at least one more game to be played.

All four runs score as the result of long balls, and Justin Turner’s two-run shot with two outs in the 6th is the difference maker after Chris Taylor and Alex Bregman trade solo shots.

2017 – Commissioner Rob Manfred issues a ruling in the case of an employee of the St. Louis Cardinals caught for hacking into the scouting database of the Houston Astros. The Cards are fined $2 million, which they must pay to Houston, and also surrender two top picks in the upcoming amateur draft to the Astros. The guilty former employee, Chris Correa, incurs a lifetime ban. This is on the top of the 46-month prison sentence and $279,000 fine he received after pleading guilty to federal charges last July.

It’s not a dominant pitching performance, however, as the four Cleveland hurlers combine to allow 7 bases on balls, although they do record 16 strikeouts. Asher Wojciechowski is the loser in his major league debut.
