1938 – At Sportsman’s Park, the St. Louis Browns walk Red Sox star Jimmie Foxx all six times he comes to bat. The Browns’ decision to pitch carefully to Foxx does not prevent the Red Sox from winning the game, 12 – 8. Being intentionally walked six times in a nine-inning game, Foxx sets an American League record and matches the mark set by Walt Wilmot in the National League in 1891.
At Boston, Jimmie Foxx drives in five runs on a pair of homers to pace the Red Sox to a 15 – 3 drubbing of Cleveland. Jim Bagby is the winner.
8/21/1937: Jimmie Foxx led off the bottom of the second inning with a homer off Jimmy DeShong that cleared the left field wall and the street behind Fenway Park. It was the only run that the Red Sox scored in four innings as the Senators were winning, 5-1, when umpire George Moriarty called the game due to a torrential downpour.
1937 – In the first of two with the Yankees‚ Jimmie Foxx hits one way out of Fenway Park‚ the ball leaving the park to the right of the CF flag pole. The shot comes off New York’s Kemp Wicker and helps the Red Sox overpower the Yankees‚ 16 – 10, stopping New York’s win streak at 10. The Yawkeymen overcome a 6-run deficit. Buck Newsom is credited with his 11th win. In game 2‚ Bump Hadley outpitches Archie McKain to push New York’s lead to 11 1/2 games over Boston.
August 11, 1937 – At Fenway Park Catcher Jimmy Foxx of the Boston Red Sox points to the outfield as Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees prepares to bat. The Yankees will prevail 8-5 in 14 innings. DiMaggio went 2-5 and homered in the first off Lefty Grove. Fox went 3-7 in the losing…
At Comiskey Park, the White Sox overcome deficits of 9-1 in the fifth and 11-3 in the seventh inning to defeat the Red Sox in extra innings, 12-11. With two outs in the 12th inning, Jack Hayes’s single plates Larry Rosenthal, who had doubled earlier in the frame, to give the Pale Hose an incredible come-from-behind victory in the second game of their twin bill sweep over Boston.
Behind Lefty Grove and Jimmie Foxx, the visiting Red Sox top the White Sox, 7 – 3. Grove wins his 13th on seven hits, while Double X bangs his 30th homer, a triple and double. Boston sub Moe Berg adds a triple, double, and single off Ted Lyons.
1936 – As the second part of the December 10 deal for Jimmie Foxx, the Boston Red Sox get Doc Cramer and Eric McNair from the Philadelphia Athletics for Hank Johnson, Al Niemiec, and $75,000. Even with the free spending, and the presence of 20-game winners Wes Ferrell and Lefty Grove, Boston will finish 6th in 1936. However, in six-plus seasons with the Sox, Foxx will hit 222 home runs, bats .300 five times, and be an All-Star six times.
