Roberto Clemente’s 4th-inning blast aborts Juan Pizarro’s embryonic no-hitter and puts Pittsburgh ahead of Milwaukee, 1 – 0. “Clemente collected the first hit and it went for everything off Pizarro in the 4th,” reports Jack Hernon of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Clemente gave Bob Friend a lead when he sent his third home run of the season sailing into the few bleacherites in right field.” Although the Bucs never relinquish this lead, Dick Groat’s infield single, a walk to Hank Foiles and Gene Baker’s RBI single in the 7th will be much appreciated when, leading off the bottom of the 9th, Eddie Mathews manages to get one just beyond the grasp of centerfielder Bill Virdon and over the right centerfield fence. Immediately thereafter, Friend’s gratitude is tempered somewhat when Baker boots Joe Adcock’s grounder, putting the tying run aboard with no one out. Having barely grasped the goat horns, Baker is bailed out by Milwaukee’s Chuck Tanner, who misses a bunt sign and bounces into a 4-6-3 double play.

On June 17, 1956, in the ninth inning of the first game of a double-header, 11-year-old Fred Gordon of Brooklyn recovered Joe Adcock's mammoth shot over the left field roof at Ebbets Field off Ed Roebuck of the Dodgers. It was Joe's second homer of the game and the first time a ball landed over the roof. The youngster returned the ball to Joe and received two new balls and the Milwaukee cap he's wearing. The Braves swept the double-header 5-4 and 3-1.

Joe Adcock’s ninth-inning home run off Brooklyn right-hander Ed Roebuck, his second round-tripper of the game, proves to be the game-winner in the Braves’ 5-4 victory over the Dodgers. The blast to left field, which clears an 83-foot wall at the 350-foot mark, is believed to the only homer ever to land on the roof at Ebbets Field.

“Clemente’s Brilliant Catch in 9th Kills Rally by Braves.” May 4 1955

“Clemente’s Brilliant Catch in 9th Kills Rally by Braves.” May 4 1955

“Clemente’s Brilliant Catch in 9th Kills Rally by Braves.” So reads the New York Times headline but that’s not the whole story. Clemente’s game-ending circus catch not only secures Pittsburgh’s 5 – 4 victory, it also bails out the main protagonist after his errant throw put the tying and go-ahead runs on 2nd and 3rd base. And who should walk to the plate at this moment but George Crowe, Clemente’s teammate and fellow Caribbean Champion with the Santurce Crabbers just three months earlier. As the Milwaukee Journal tells it: “Crowe, who had replaced the slump-ridden Joe Adcock at first base, pasted the ball against the remote grandstand not far from the right field foul line, only to have young Roberto Clemente race over and time his leap perfectly as he scraped the ball off the wall with his gloved hand.”

The Dodgers’ Clem Labine beans Joe Adcock in the 4th. Though he is wearing a batting helmet, Adcock is taken out of the game as a precautionary measure. His helmet apparently saves him from a serious injury. He will appear in the starting line-up the next day. Gene Conley reciprocates by knocking down Jackie Robinson in the 6th. Robinson ends up scrapping with Eddie Mathews. The Braves win, 10 – 5, their 10th win in a row, as Conley runs his record to 10-5.

Led by OF Jim Pendleton’s three home runs, the Braves tie the Yankees’ 1939 major-league record for the most homers in a game with eight

Led by OF Jim Pendleton’s three home runs, the Braves tie the Yankees’ 1939 major-league record for the most homers in a game with eight in their 19 – 4 win over Pittsburgh in the first game of a doubleheader. Pendleton is only the second rookie in history to hit three home runs in one game. In game two of the doubleheader, the Braves hit four more long balls to win 11 – 5. The 12 homers in a doubleheader shatter the previous mark of 9. Eddie Mathews’s four dingers for the day give him a National League-leading 43; he will end the season with 47 home runs, 30 of them on the road to set a major-league record.
