1969 â Roberto Clementeâs tape-measure two-run blast ties the game at 3-all after six, en route to a come-from-behind 4 â 3 Pirate win over Houston. âClementeâs homer â his second in two nights â was a prodigious wallop of some 430 feet that landed about 12 rows up in the steps to the right of the service ramp in center field. In addition to loosening a few boards and frightening small children, it also tied the score at 3-all. Matty Alou was aboard with a walk when Jim Ray tried to fling one pitch too many past the dangerous Clemente. Clemente saw the ball good and he sped up his swing and timed the connection perfectly. Jim Wynn, in center, gave token pursuit of the eighth blast this year off the 34-year-old Puerto Rican heroâs bat. But heâd have needed a ladder to reach the blast which soared far over Wynnâs head.â The Astros wisely do not afford Clemente the opportunity to beat them; his 8th-inning at-bat with 2 outs, the go-ahead run in scoring position and first base open yields the predictable free pass. Ironically, in the 9th, the gameâs goat thus far, shortstop Freddie Patek comes up with 2 outs, the go-ahead run in scoring position and first base open; his two-run error had put Pitt in in an early 3 â 1 hole. But manager Larry Shepard, apparently no devotee of the âHollywood endingâ, bats Carl Taylor in his stead. Taylor singles for the 4 â 3 lead and Jim Bunning retires the Astros in order in the bottom of the frame, when Wynn hits a fly ball that sends left fielder Jose Pagan to the fence for the final out.
=1962 In Game 5 of the World Series, Tom Tresh belts an eighth-inning homer off Jack Sanford to give the Bronx Bombers a 5-3 comeback win over the Giants at Yankee Stadium. The rookie shortstopâs dad, Mike Tresh, who hit only two home runs in his dozen big league seasons, before the at-bat left his seat behind home plate and moved to the standing-room section in Yankee Stadium, hoping to bring his son good luck.
1962 â In the opener of the World Series at Candlestick Park, Whitey Fordâs record scoreless inning streak ends at 33 2/3 when a surprising squeeze play by Jose Pagan brings Willie Mays home. The Yankees beat San Francisco, 6 â 2, the last of a record 10 World Series victories for Ford.
On October 2, 1962 The Giants scored first for the second consecutive game, as Orlando Cepeda singled with one out in the second inning and scored on a double by Felipe Alou against Dodgersâ starter Don Drysdale. The Giants then extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Alou struck out to openâŠ
