Minnesota Twins acquire relief ace Jeff Reardon
The Minnesota Twins announce that interim manager Tom Kelly will be the club’s skipper next season. Kelly, who replaced Ray Miller at the end of the 1986 season, will compile a losing record (1140-1244) but win two World Championships during his 16-year tenure as the Twins manager.
On the day the Twins are celebrating their 25th anniversary, in a game which also features Kirby Puckett hitting for the cycle, Bert Blyleven becomes the tenth major leaguer to record his 3,000th strikeout. The Minnesota right-hander, who tosses a two-hitter, reaches the historic milestone by whiffing Mike Davis in the fifth inning, his eighth of the game, en route to a career-high of 15, in the team’s 10-1 victory over Oakland at the Metrodome.
On June 2, 1986, future Hall of Famer Rod Carew announces his retirement at the age of 40. Carew leaves the game with a .328 batting mark, compiled over 19 years in the major leagues. The former Minnesota Twins’ and California Angels’ infielder will gain election to the Hall of Fame in 1991…
On January 16, 1986, the New York Mets acquire second baseman Tim Teufel and a minor leaguer from the Minnesota Twins for three minor leaguers: outfielder Billy Beane and pitchers Joe Klink and Bill Latham. 1985 – Minnesota Twins first baseman Kent Hrbek signs a new contract making him the club’s first million dollar player.
At Minnesota, Detroit tops the Twins, 5 – 3, when Lou Whitaker bloops an inside-the-park homer to win it. Detroit sends it to extra innings when RF Kirk Gibson throws out Tim Teufel at home with two out in the 9th. Willie Hernandez (5-0) is the winner.
Twins rookie Andre David hits a 2-run home run off Jack Morris in his first major league at bat to spark Minnesota to a 5 – 3 win over Detroit before 44,619. It is the only home run David will hit in the big leagues and it stops Morris’s 11-game win streak over the Twins. Detroit wins the nitecap, 7 – 5, as Kirk Gibson starts the scoring with a two-run homer in the 1st and ends it with a two-run homer in the 9th. The Tigers also score in the 2nd on back-to-back homers by Chet Lemon and Ruppert Jones.
Roger Clemens earns his first major league victory as the Boston Red Sox beat the Minnesota Twins, 5 – 4.
