Roger Clemens is fined a reported $50,000 for throwing the jagged barrel of a shattered bat in the direction of Met catcher Mike Piazza in the first inning of Game 2 of the World Series. Yankee manager Joe Torre and the right-hander both deny the incident was intentional.
In Game 2, the Yankees extend their World Series winning streak to 14 consecutive games, defeating the Mets, 6-5, in a game which is overshadowed by Roger Clemens throwing the barrel of a shattered bat at Mike Piazza as the Met catcher runs to first. The eagerly awaited at-bat, due to the Rocket’s beaning of the Mets’ superstar in July, results in the two players confronting one another and the emptying of both benches.
2000 – The New York Yankees batter the Seattle Mariners, 8 – 2, to take a 2 games to 1 lead in the ALCS. Bernie Williams and Tino Martinez hit back-to-back home runs in the 2nd inning for New York, while David Justice has three RBI. Mariano Rivera breaks Whitey Ford’s record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched in postseason play with 33 1/3 scoreless frames.
Winning for the first time in 16 starts, David Cone ends the worst slump of his career as the Yankees beat the A’s, 12-6. Newly acquired Jose Canseco hits a three-run homer into the upper deck to help Cone stop the skid.
Oakland Athletics second baseman Randy Velarde turns an unassisted triple play, just the 11th in major league history, on a line drive hit by Shane Spencer of the New York Yankees. With runners on first and second base running with the pitch, Velarde tags Jorge Posada as he nears second base, then touches the base to retire Tino Martinez. In 1995 spring training, while with the Yankees, Velarde turned an unassisted triple play against the Dodgers.

DH Chili Davis’ 2nd-inning home run is New York’s only safety. Chuck Knoblauch, leading off the game, gives the Yankees their only other baserunner; he is caught stealing, so Martinez faces just one over the minimum.
The Angels defeat the Tigers, 10 – 2, as Chuck Finley becomes the first pitcher in history to strike out four batters in an inning twice in his career. Finley previously fanned four Yankees in Anaheim’s game with the New Yorkers on May 12th. Both instances occurred in the 1st inning.
