On November 12, 1993, Hall of Fame catcher Bill Dickey dies at the age of 86. The former New York Yankees’ great, who was elected to the Hall in 1954, batted .313 with 202 home runs over a 17-year career in the major leagues.
1992 – Arbitrator George Nicolau overturns the suspension of Yankees pitcher Steve Howe for being too severe. The pitcher is re-signed by the team.
A’s hurler Bob Welch (27-6, 2.95, 127) wins the AL Cy Young Award. The 34 year-old right-hander’s 27 wins are the most victories in the majors since 1972 when Steve Carlton won that many for the last-place Phillies.
Roger Clemens (24-4, 2.48), joining Denny McLain who accomplish the feat in 1968, becomes only the second American League pitcher to unanimously win the Cy Young Award when he captures all 28 first-place votes cast by the writers. The Red Sox 24 year-old right-hander will also be named the circuit’s most valuable player.
Don Zimmer is named manager of the Texas Rangers, becoming the 10th manager in the club’s nine-year history.
Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Stone, who led the American League with 25 victories, wins the Cy Young Award over Mike Norris of the Oakland Athletics.
1975 – Tom Seaver of the New York Mets wins his third Cy Young Award. He posted 243 strikeouts with a 2.38 ERA and led the National League with 22 victories.
1969 – Minnesota Twins infielder Harmon Killebrew, who led the American League with 49 home runs, 140 RBI, and a .430 on-base percentage, is voted AL Most Valuable Player.
1966 – The Los Angeles Dodgers complete an 18-game tour of Japan with a 9-8-1 record, the most losses ever for a major league club touring the Far East.
On November 12, 1964, former Cincinnati Reds manager Fred Hutchinson dies after a battle with cancer. On August 19, the 45-year-old Hutchinson had resigned as Cincinnati’s skipper due to his illness. The major leagues will eventually institute the “Hutch” Award, given to the player who displays the courage of the former manager…
