1931 – Acting under a new draft agreement with the Pacific Coast League, the Brooklyn Robins purchase the contract of catcher Ernie Lombardi from the Oakland Oaks.
1924 – Oakland Oaks owner Cal Ewing announces that he has sold the team to Washington Senators star Walter Johnson, represented by George Weiss, who deposited a check for $5,000 towards the purchase. Last month, Ewing announced that the sale price was an enthusiastic $450,000 (the St. Louis Cardinals’s recent sale was for $275,000). Nothing will come of all the talk, and Johnson will return to the Washington team.
Cack Henley completes the longest complete-game shutout in baseball history, blanking his opponents over 24 innings in the Seals’ 1-0 victory over the Oakland Oaks and Jimmy Wiggs, who also goes the distance during the extra-inning marathon at San Francisco’s Recreation Park. The future Pacific Coast League Hall of Famer’s two-dozen scoreless frames ties three other hurlers for the most thrown by a PCL pitcher in one game.
