1996 – For the third year in a row, a Dodgers member is named Rookie of the Year. Raúl Mondesi, like last year’s pick, Mike Piazza, is a unanimous choice. The fleet Dominican outfielder hit .306 with 16 home runs and 16 assists.
1993 – Paul Molitor comes within a double of hitting for the cycle as Toronto takes a 2-1 World Series lead in Philadelphia. Roberto Alomar adds four hits to back winner Pat Hentgen in a 10 – 3 romp.
Lonnie Smith becomes the first player in baseball history to play in the World Series with four different teams when leads off for the Braves in Game 1 at the Metrodome. The DH, who scores a run in the team’s 5-2 loss to the Twins, has also appeared in the Fall Classic with the Phillies (1980), Cardinals (1982), and the Royals (1985).
1991 – Minnesota defeats the Braves, 5 – 2, in Game 1 of the World Series. Greg Gagne’s three-run home run off Charlie Leibrandt in the 5th inning helps support the strong effort of winning pitcher Jack Morris.
1990 – The Cincinnati Reds move within one game of a shocking World Series sweep by beating the Oakland Athletics, 8 – 3, in Game 3. Chris Sabo has a pair of home runs for the Reds.
1989 – Houston radio station KKBQ announces that the World Series is coming to the Astrodome after an earthquake rattles California, sending the Fall Classic into turmoil. General Manager Bill Wood blasts the false report as “sick humor”.
1988 – The Dodgers take advantage of Oakland errors to beat Dave Stewart, 4 – 3, in Game 4 of the World Series.
1987 – In one of his final acts as General Manager, Dick Wagner decides to exercise a contract option on Nolan Ryan. It was a strange year for the Express, leading the league in strikeouts and ERA but suffering an 8-16 record. The Astros could have either paid the 40-year-old righthander an estimated $1.3 million or released him to free agency.
On October 19, 1987 — The Yankees name Billy Martin as their manager for the fifth and final time, replacing Lou Piniella, who replaced Martin and is moved to general manager. At Shea Stadium, Steve Crawford is the winning pitcher in the Red Sox’ 9-3 victory over the Mets in Game 2 of the World Series. The right-handed reliever, who was 0-2 before the start of the postseason, becomes the first hurler to win a Fall Classic contest after being winless during the regular season.
