The White Sox complete a three-game postseason sweep of the Red Sox, defeating the defending World Series champion in Game 3 of the ALDS, 5-3. The Fenway Park victory marks the first time the Pale Hose have won a postseason series since 1917.

2001 Shane Reynolds wins his 100th game as an Astro and it comes at the best possible time. He drops St. Louis, 9-2, to claim Houston’s fourth division title in five years . Richard Hidalgo blasts a two-run homer in the second off Darryl Kile and the Astros never look back . While the two clubs share 93-69 records, the Astros claim the title by winning nine of 16 head-to-head matchups.
The San Francisco Giants’ Barry Bonds extends his major league record for home runs in season to 73 as he drives a 3-2 1st-inning knuckleball off Dodgers pitcher Dennis Springer over the right field fence. The blast also secures two more major league records for Bonds as he surpasses Babe Ruth – who slugged .847 in 1920 – with a .863 season slugging percentage and bests Mark McGwire, who in 1998 hit one HR every 7.27 at-bat by homering in every 6.52 at-bats.
On the last day of the season, Rickey Henderson bloops a double down the right-field line off Rockies’ hurler John Thomson to become the 25th major leaguer to collect 3000 hits. Tony Gwynn, who is playing in his last major league game and is also a member of the 3000 hit club, meets the Padre outfielder at home plate in front of a sellout crowd Qualcomm Park.
Benny Agbayani’s 13th inning home run ends the longest LDS game ever played, 5 hours and 22 minutes. The dramatic round-tripper by the Mets outfielder, who was voted the 36th greatest athlete from Hawaii by Sports Illustrated, gives New York a 3-2 victory and 2-1 series advantage over the Giants.
1998 – Chuck Knoblauch of the New York Yankees argues for an interference call at first base instead of picking up the ball while Enrique Wilson scores to break a 1 – 1 tie in the 12th inning of the Cleveland Indians’ 4 – 1 victory at Yankee Stadium in Game 2 of the ALCS.

The $63 million facelift of the eight year-old facility, originally known as the Florida Suncoast Dome, will take fifteen months to complete.
