1922 – Former Providence Grays outfielder Paul Hines is arrested on charges of pick-pocketing. The 69-year-old Hines made a famous play in a game on May 8, 1878: the first unassisted triple play in major league history, a rare feat has only occurred 12 times after that. His accomplishment is questionable, however.
1902 – Little Tommy Leach of Pittsburgh, hits two home runs at Boston. He will close out the season with only 6, all inside-the-park, but it is enough to give him sole leadership of the National League, which totals only 99. Leach’s leading number is the lowest since Paul Hines hit four in a 60-game schedule in 1878.
Today’s Chicago Tribune publishes NL batting figures through May 31st that show Fred Carroll (.476)‚ Sam Thompson (.454)‚ and Paul Hines (.438) leading the league. Walks are counted as hits this year.
The New York Clipper reports that Paul Hines, a Providence Grays outfielder, and resident of Washington, DC, had been challenged to catch a ball dropped from the top of the Washington Monument, a distance of “over 535 feet from the ground.” The Clipper calculates the “natural philosophy” involved, and warns Hines of the danger he would confront in attempting such a foolish stunt.
