Roberts led theĀ National LeagueĀ inĀ startsĀ andĀ innings pitchedĀ for five straight seasons and was tops inĀ victoriesĀ for four consecutive years on his way to 286 career wins. Lemon earned 20 victories six times and won 207 career games.
Robin Roberts, getting the Cubsā 4-2 win in relief, becomes the first and only pitcher to beat the Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta Braves. On Independence Day in 1948, the future Hall of Famer went the distance to notch his third career big league victory, beating the Boston Braves at Shibe Park in his rookie year with the Phillies.
1966Ā ā The first major league game on artificial turf is played in the Astrodome. Two future Hall-of-Famers face off. 21-year-old rookieĀ Don SuttonĀ stymiesĀ Robin RobertsĀ and the Astros for a 6-3 Dodger win, the first of his career. The infield was carpeted with the Monsanto product Judge Roy Hofheinz dubbed āAstroturfā. The outfield and foul grounds were still dirt but had the zippered sod installed after the homestand.
1965Ā āĀ Robin Roberts, nearing the end of a Hall of Fame career, makes a memorable Astro debut. Before a cheering Astrodome throng, Roberts twirls a four-hit shutout against his old Philadelphia team, 8-0Ā . It is his 277th career win. The Phillies had let Roberts go back in 1961 because he was considered washed up. The Astros inked Robin after Baltimore released him. Roberts would finish the year 5-2 (1.89 ERA) in Houston.
Harmon Killebrew tags the longest homer ever hit in Baltimoreās Memorial Stadium. The Twins left fielderās 471-foot shot, which clears the hedge in left center field, is hit off Milt Pappas in the eighth inning of a 7-6 loss to the Orioles.
