Rube Marquard begins a nineteen-game consecutive winning streak by beating the Dodgers, 18-3, in a game which features 13 ground rule doubles hit by the visitors because of the overflow crowd being placed in the outfield and along the foul lines. The future Hall of Fame southpaw’s streak will end in July when the Giants lose to Chicago at the West Side Grounds, 7-2.
1911 – The Philadelphia Athletics score twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3 – 2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hits a home run in the 9th inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1 – 1. Baker will be tagged with the nickname “Home Run” Baker for his exploits.
1911 – In the World Series, pitchers Rube Marquard of the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics’ Eddie Plank are in command of a 1 – 1 game when Philadelphia’s Eddie Collins hits a RBI double in the 6th inning and Frank Baker bats a home run for a 3 – 1 victory. The Series is even after two games.
At Forbes Field, Rube Marquard, with relief from Christy Mathewson, beats the Pirates, 6 – 2. Before the game the Giants’ mascot, Victory Faust, strikes out Honus Wagner on three pitches, to the delight of the 20,000 fans.
At the Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati, the Giants establish a club mark, hitting four triples in one game. The plethora of three-baggers, including two-legged out by Hall of Fame hurler Rube Marquard as well as one each from Larry Doyle and Chief Meyers, and nine other hits enable New York to beat the Reds, 8-3.
Chicago Cubs slugger Frank Schulte hits a grand slam off Rube Marquard to beat the New York Giants, 8 – 4. Schulte will slam four this season, a record tied by Babe Ruth in 1919 and topped by Ernie Banks’ five in 1955.
