April 10, 1950 – Due to a salary dispute, St. Louis Browns pitcher Al Widmar quits the team and threatens to sue baseball. Widmar will sign a contract within the week. 1949 – The Browns send star 3B Bob Dillinger (.324) and OF Paul Lehner to the A’s for a reported $100,000 and infielders Frankie Gustine and Billy DeMars, and outfielders Ray Coleman and Ray Ippolitto. Dillinger will play just a half-season in Philly before being swapped to Pittsburgh.
1949 – The St. Louis Browns, owners of Sportsman’s Park, move to evict the St. Louis Cardinals in order to gain a rent increase.
To get a rental increase from their Sportsman’s Park’s tenants, the Browns move to evict the Cardinals. The Redbirds accuse the owners of breaking the lease, and as the season approaches, it is uncertain where the National League team will play its home games.
In his major league debut with the Browns, St. Louis native Hank Arft bangs a triple and a home run off Frank Hiller. Arft drives in three runs as the host Browns top New York, 4 – 0. Tomorrow’s cheers of “Arft, Arft” will give Hank his nickname “Bow Wow.”
On July 9, 1948, At Cleveland Stadium, Satchel Paige makes his major league debut for the Cleveland Indians. Paige relieves Bob Lemon in the fifth inning, becoming the first black pitcher in American League history. 1947 – The Indians pick up Johnny Berardino from the Browns for Catfish Metkovich and $50,000. Because of a broken finger, Metkovich will be returned to Cleveland, and the Indians will add another $15,000 to complete the deal. At the end of 1952, Berardino will drop baseball as well as the 2nd “r” in his name, and start a successful acting career in Hollywood.
In the second of two deals between the clubs on consecutive days, St. Louis obtains Sam Dente, Clem Dreisewerd, Bill Sommers, and $65,000 from the Red Sox in exchange for Ellis Kinder and Billy Hitchcock. When the dust settles on the two-day, 13-player transaction, Boston ends up with two top-of-the-rotation hurlers, Kinder and Jack Kramer, and an All-Star offensive shortstop to hit behind Ted Williams, Vern Stephens, and the cash-deprived Browns, in addition to its four new players, receive a total of $375,000.
In the first of two deals between the clubs on consecutive days, the Browns trade right-hander Jack Kramer along with All-Star shortstop Vern Stephens to the Red Sox for Pete Layden, Joe Ostrowski, Roy Partee, Eddie Pellagrini, Al Widmar, Jim Wilson, and $310,000. Boston plans to bat their new slugging middle infielder, known as Junior to his teammates, behind Ted Williams.
