The Arizona Diamondbacks sign Buck Showalter to a seven-year contract as manager

On November 15, 1995 — The Arizona Diamondbacks, who will not begin play until the 1998 season, sign Buck Showalter to a seven-year contract as manager. Showalter guided the New York Yankees to a wild card berth in 1995, but left the team after it lost its first-round playoff series.

The semifinal of the women’s bracket is held at the 2015 Pan American Games, with the winner advancing to the Gold Medal game and the loser taking Bronze. Canada starter Autumn Mills throws a four-hit, one-run complete game, but Canada fails to score against Esquiea Rengel for four innings, trailing 1-0. They then explode for six runs in the 5th on three hits, two walks, an error, a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly. Becky Hartley’s two-run single off reliever Giddelys Cumaná puts Canada ahead for good, giving Venezuela the Bronze.

2014 – Journeyman pitcher Yusmeiro Petit of the Giants sets a new major league mark when he begins a spot start against the Rockies by retiring the first 8 batters of the game. He had entered the contest having retired the last 38 batters he had faced over 7 appearances, dating back to July 22nd. His third out of the day ties the National League mark of 41 held by Jim Barr, and each out after that increases it. When he strikes out Jackson Williams to lead off the 3rd, he ties the major league record of 45 set by Mark Buehrle in 2009; he then sets a new record of 46 when he strikes out Charlie Culberson. The next batter, P Jordan Lyles end the streak with a double to left. Petit ends up giving up a single run in 6 innings and gets credit for the 4 – 1 win.
