rain, bad umpiring by Ollie Chill, and lousy luck beat the Nationals Walter Johnson 4 – 2

On June 27, 1914, At Shibe Park the Philadelphia A’s top Walter Johnson (11-8) and Washington, 4 – 2. Eddie Collins is 2 for 4 with a run and RBI for the A’s.

A combination of rain, bad umpiring, and lousy luck beat the Nationals in the series’ final game with the Mackmen today. Chief Bender (4-2) coming through -with a 4-2 victory over Walter Johnson. One bad inning, the first, caused the Nationals’ defeat.

Eddie Collins spilled the beans with one infield hit, a slow roller down the third-base line. Had Johnson allowed the ball to roll, it would have settled on foul territory, and the result might have been different as it was. Collins reached firstbase safety, filling the sacks, and then forced in a run by walking Frank Baker. Strunk’s single scored two more, while Baker counted on an Infield out.

Johnson kicked several times on home plate umpire Ollie Chill’s decisions in the opening round.

Chill put Johnson In a hole by calling two balls on pitches, which catcher Eddie Ainsmith declares, cut the plate. With the rain pouring down continuously from the second Inning, Chill refused to call the game until one man had been retired in the Athletics half of the fifth inning.

Then. Chill called, “time, at the order of Umpire Jack Sheridan, only Chill and Sheridan were working the game.

Chill, working behind the plate, was the official chief umpire, but he took orders from Sheridan throughout the series. The Nationals delayed the game as much as possible. Morgan tying his shoe time and again; Ainsmlth took several minutes to adjust his chest protector and mask, but it didn’t help in the least. Chill would not give the Nationals a thing, .and as long as he continues to work behind the plate, the Washington club will get the worst of the decisions.

Chill stopped the game for about twenty minutes in the fifth inning and then resumed play. The field was heavy when hostilities when the game restarted.

Chick Gandil, who Chill fined $25 for throwing a ball near him yesterday, was chased’ to the clubhouse in the fifth inning today for the same offense.

Gandil. picked up the ball, which was wet, and he attempted to shoot it home to Ainsmlth. The ball slipped and hit the dirt in front of the plate; the ball came closer to Chill than it did to Ainsmlth. As a result, Gandil drew a walk. He will likely draw a suspension from Ban Johnson for the alleged offense Wally Smith replaced Gandil on first.

Trailing 4-2 in the 9th, the real fireworks almost happened. After Walter Johnson had singled, Moeller and Milan filed out, but Foster singled, and Smith beat out an Infield tap.’ Shanks tried hard to come through with a safe blow, but Collins took his drive with one hand grab, retiring Howard at first. This ended the ball game.
