The Cleveland Indians shake up their front office: they announce that GM Mark Shapiro will become team President at the end of the season, when his assistant Chris Antonetti becomes General Manager. Current President Paul Dolan, the son of owner Larry Dolan, will become Chairman and CEO in his father’s place. Antonetti, like newly-appointed Toronto Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos, began his career as an intern with the Montreal Expos. He joined the former franchise in 1997, before moving to the Indians in 1999, where he has held a number of front office positions.

Televising the deciding Game 5 of the NLCS, a 3-2 Giants victory over the Cubs from Candlestick Park, NBC broadcasts its final edition of the Game of the Week. Next season, CBS’s sporadic and less frequent coverage of a regular season weekly game led many to believe the network was really only interested in airing the All-Star Game and postseason contests.

October 9, 1989

The St. Louis Cardinals hit three home runs in a 5 – 4 victory over the Francisco Giants, who lead the National League Championship Series by two games to one. Jim Edmonds, Eli Marrero and Mike Matheny clout round-trippers for the Cards while Barry Bonds adds one for San Francisco. Chuck Finley gets the win for St. Louis.
